Montenegro: Floods in the refugee Camp Konik DREF Operation (MDRME006) Final report

Summary: In September 2012 heavy rains and storms affected the refugee camp Konik I in Montenegro, near the city of Podgorica. Five tents collapsed completely and all the others were flooded, thereby damaging the personal belongings of the residents. As a result of the flooding, the living conditions in the camp worsened as the previously distributed blankets, mattresses, kitchen utensils, clothes etc. were destroyed by water or were washed away, leaving the population of the camp even worse off than after the fire that happened in July 2012.

CHF 83,656 (USD 89,519 or EUR 69,143) has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 150 families (800 beneficiaries). Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Summary:

On July 24th 2012 refugee camp Konik, in the suburbs of Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, caught fire. The whole settlement of camp Konik I was destroyed with prefabricated houses – 38 of them – burning down.

UNECE supports international cooperation on Drin River Basin to prevent floods and protect waters

With the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and Global Water Partnership-Mediterranean, the first meeting of the Drin Core Group took place on 30 May 2012 in Ohrid, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. This was the first meeting of the Core Group as the official joint body according to the memorandum of understanding signed on 25 November 2011 in Tirana by the five Drin River Riparians — Albania, Greece, Kosovo (United Nations administered region under security council resolution 1244), Montenegro and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

EU Civil Protection Field Exercise: Large scale flooding in Croatia

21/05/2012 – Today, civil protection intervention teams from seven Western Balkan countries are arriving near Zagreb in Croatia to take part in a four-day exercise simulating a large scale flooding. The teams from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo(*) will be participating side by side with their EU colleagues and trainers from Slovenia, Germany, Sweden and Luxembourg.

UNHCR to continue helping Balkans flood victims over the winter

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina, January 7 (UNHCR) - The UN refugee agency has warned that victims of the worst floods to hit Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring Montenegro in decades will continue to need help during the winter months.

The flash floods in early December led to 40,000 people being evacuated from their damaged or destroyed homes, including about 10,000 who were uprooted by violence in the region in the 1990s. Many of these people needed shelter and other assistance.

Balkans: Red Cross works tirelessly in wake of severe floods

In north-western Albania, the prefecture of Shkodra faces some of the worst flooding that the Balkans has seen recently. The Shkodra branch of the Albanian Red Cross has mobilized more than 50 people to respond to an emergency that, countrywide, has seen 4,700 buildings flooded. Of these, 3,500 are still surrounded by standing water, and over 2,500 people have had to be evacuated.

A national appeal was launched to boost the capacity of the National Society to help those affected. A request for support was also made to the IFRC, which allocated 204,031 Swiss francs

EU supports Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro in combating floods

Due to heavy rainfalls the Republic of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are suffering from severe flooding. The three countries have activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

On 1st of December, Albania activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism requesting wooden boats, rubber boats, tents, water pumps, helicopters and other assets. Several Participating States have responded to this request for assistance.

Flooding in Montenegro - deployment of a B-FAST team

In the wake of severe flooding in the Balkans, Belgium has decided to send a B-FAST team to Montenegro, one of the hardest-hit countries in the region, in response to an appeal by the Montenegrin government.

The B-FAST Coordination Council, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere, has decided to dispatch a two-strong Civil Protection team and around 10 water pumps.

The mission will cost around €45,000 and a cargo plane will leave for Montenegro within the next few days.

CHF International Responding to Flooding in Colombia and Montenegro

CHF International is currently responding to one of the most underreported natural disasters of 2010.
