Torrential monsoon rains have caused massive flooding and landslides in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. UMCOR has sent a grant to the Friends Service Council in Nepal which will be used to provide food, cooking materials, and other relief materials. The floods and landslides in Nepal are being described as the worst ever. Nearly 300 people have been killed and more than 50,000 have been displaced. Death toll rises as twin typhoons ravage Asia

AUCKLAND, July 5 (AFP) - The death toll rose on Friday as atrocious typhoon weather that has wiped out entire families, made thousands homeless and brought havoc to airlines and electricity grids continued to rage across Asia.

Typhoon Rammasun, which has already left thousands of Okinawans without electricity after cutting power lines this week, claimed at least six victims around China's east coast city of Shanghai on Friday.

Typhoon threatens China, another heads for Guam

MANILA, July 4 (Reuters) - A powerful typhoon named "God of Thunder" raged towards flood-stricken China on Thursday while another storm raced across the Pacific Ocean towards Guam and the Marianas islands after killing dozens on another tiny island.

Typhoon Rammasun, Thai for God of Thunder, was expected to brush the coast of China's Zhejiang province late on Thursday, packing powerful winds and heavy rain that would drench Shanghai, Chinese officials and state media said.

Vietnam Floods Factsheet #1, FY 2000

Background: During the first two weeks of November 1999, six provinces in central Vietnam experienced the heaviest rainfall and flooding to hit the region in 40 years. The provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Sing Dinh, as well as the city of Da Nang, were most severely affected.
