ANGOLA: Attacks along strategic humanitarian route

People fleeing the besieged government-held city of Malanje along a strategic humanitarian convoy route to the capital Luanda have increasingly come under attack by armed gunmen in recent days, the UN Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Unit (UCAH) said in its latest report.

ANGOLA: Attaques le long d'un axe humanitaire stratégique
Les attaques à l'arme à feu se sont multipliées ces derniers jours contre les habitants qui fuient le siège de la ville de Malanje tenue par les troupes régulières, le long de la route qui mène à la capitale, Luanda, et qui constitue un axe stratégique pour les convois humanitaires, a annoncé le Service de Coordination de l'Assistance Humanitaire des Nations Unies (UCAH) dans son dernier bulletin.

The Disaster
Unusually heavy rains for this time of year and violent thunderstorms along the western and south-western coast of Sri Lanka between 16 and 21 April caused widespread damage and severe floods in the south-west and south of the country. The main rivers, Kelani and Kalu, rose by over seven feet, and caused additional flooding, made worse by slow run-off. Some of the worst areas received as much as 290 mm of rain in 24 hours, and even the capital, Colombo, where 284 mm fell within 24 hours, experienced bad flooding in many sectors of the city.

ADB assures Dhaka of 350 mln USD in aid

DHAKA, April 26 (AFP) - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has assured Bangladesh of 350 million dollars in aid during the fiscal year to June 2000, and urged Dhaka to improve the use of aid, officials said here Monday.

"The disbursement of the assistance would depend on the rate of utilisation of foreign aid in the country's development projects," the Manila-based ADB's resident representative here was quoted by officials as saying Sunday.

1. The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Colombo reported that 200,000 people were left homeless following torrential rains continuing since 19 April in the Western and Southern administrative districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle and Matara on 19 April. Six persons were reportedly killed.

2. The rainy weather was caused by a disturbance in the Bay of Bengal and was expected to continue for a few more days, according to the information released by the Department

Two dead, 200,000 homeless in Sri Lanka floods

COLOMBO, April 21 (AFP) - Heavy rains have claimed two lives in mud slides and left over 200,000 people homeless in Sri Lanka, forcing the military to begin rescue operations, officials said Wednesday.

Troops were deployed near the capital to evacuate people from a village where an irrigation reservoir showed signs of breaching, officials said.

Private international schools declared a holiday as many roads and streets were under water in the capital Colombo and several parts of the country lashed by torrential rains.

Bangladesh to put everything on table at Paris aid meet

DHAKA, April 9 (AFP) - Bangladesh will attempt to allay the anxiety of foreign aid donors over its ability to use development funds responsibly when they gather for the annual aid meetings in Paris this month.

"As development partners, donors are perfectly entitled to voice concern over the political situation in Bangladesh," Finance Minister Shah Kibria told AFP. "We are trying to remove their anxiety."

WFP emergency operation in China ends with final food distribution

BEIJING - The United Nations World Food Programme announced on Thursday it had completed its first ever emergency operation in China by helping 5.7 million victims of last year's floods.
The five-month emergency operation was launched at the end of October last year following the worst floods in China since 1954. It ended after a final distribution of 87,000 metric tons of rice last week in 320 of the worst-affected townships in Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. That brought the total amount of rice distributed to 315,000 metric tons - about 90 percent of the target set

1. The report covers the period from mid to end of March in the most seriously affected province, Inhambane, on the basis of information provided by UNDP and WFP.

WFP launches US$32.5 million development programme for Kenya

NAIROBI, 7 April 1999 - The UN World Food Programme today announced it has signed a US$32.5 million Kenya Country Programme agreement with the Government which will provide 85,000 tons of food aid and operational assistance from now until 2003.
The WFP County Programme was designed in collaboration with the Government of Kenya to support its poverty alleviation initiatives in the country. The programme, which is linked to other UN agency projects, includes school feeding, disaster preparedness and community nutrition and care projects.

Mozambique: Fighting floods

The Mozambique Red Cross Society, together with the International Federation delegation and local authorities, is assisting more than 35,000 people affected by the worst floods to hit the country for 40 years.

Torrential rains at the beginning of March have caused severe flooding, especially in the northern districts of Inhamban. Over 6,000 people are reported to have lost their homes, and at least 36 have died - and these figures could rise, as some areas are still completely cut off by the floods.
