Floods affecting these two countries, as well as the contiguous far western Amazon area of Brazil, have exacerbated as a result of very high rainfall in the first three months of this year. In Bolivia they are reported to be the worst floods for over 50 years,

Oxfam sent two Emergency Support Personnel to participate in an assessment of the effects of flooding in the south of the country, a region where Oxfam is not currently operational; contiguous areas in Zambia and Mozambique have also been affected by the same floods.

Ecuador Floods Situation Report No.1

SITUATION

1. Since the beginning of March, abnormal rains have been affecting a vast part of Ecuador, causing serious flooding in ten provinces (out of a total of 21). Record high precipitation levels have been registered in Manta, Guayaquil, Machala and other cities. According to weather forecasting services, high precipitation levels will continue during the next 10 days.

2. Most severely affected provinces along the coast are: Esmeraldas, Manabi, Guayas, and El Oro. 80 per cent of the city of Guayaquil (pop. 2 million) was last Wednesday under 2 to 5 feet

Bolivia Floods Situation Report No. 2

APPROXIMATELY 190,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED

1. The UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in La Paz indicates that, according to latest reports from the Bolivian Civil Defense, the entire country has been affected by the floods which have caused extensive damage to people and property. In the Department of Chuquisaca, the last one to be hit by the flood waters, 3,228 families have been affected (approximately 16,000 people) and 56 houses destroyed.

2. Latest figures indicate that 38, 976 families have been affected (approximately 190,000 people)

Commission approves humanitarian aid of a total amount of ECU 1.84 Million in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia

The European Commission approves humanitarian aid of a total amount of ECU 1.84 million for Ecuador (440.000 ECU), Peru (600.000 ECU) and Bolivia (800.000 ECU). This aid comes forward following a series of natural disasters, mainly droughts and floodings. The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will be distributed by the Red Cross and Caritas.

A prolonged period of drought in the Provinces of Loja and El Oro (south-west of Ecuador) hit 34,000 people, most of whom live in poor rural communities. The affected population has

Bolivian Flood Victims

Heavy rains over the mountains of central Bolivia in January have caused mudslides and flooding over more than one million square kilometres, affecting eight of the country's nine provinces. More than 100,000 people have seen their houses damaged or destroyed, their crops lost and their livestock killed. All branches of the Bolivian Red Cross have been assisting victims, as part of Bolivia's national response to the disastrous floods, providing first aid and organizing campaigns to collect food and clothes.
