Price Monitoring and Analysis Country Brief: Mali, January-April 2011

Key Messages

A generally good food supply situation is likely to have been be the driving force of price stability and decreases in recent months. However nominal prices of millet and rice have reached the levels observed in 2008.

Food security has improved; however different agencies are concerned over undernurishment levels and serious hunger conditions.

The country was directly affected by the Ivorian crisis which has forced thousand of refugees to the country.

Price Monitoring and Analysis Country Brief: Somalia, January-April 2011

Key Messages

Dramatic increases in the prices of local cereals are registered in Southern and Central Somalia, mainly due to drought that affected production of sorghum and maize. Nominal rice and maize prices may soon approach the levels observed in 2008.

The number of food insecure people in need of food assistance has increased to 2.4 million in the last six months.

The ongoing civil conflict and the severe drought during the 2010/11 secondary deyr season are the major drivers of deteriorating food security conditions in the country.

Price Monitoring and Analysis Country Brief: Sudan, January-April 2011

Key Messages

The high levels of cereal and livestock prices have a negative effect on access to food for poor households, exacerbating their food insecurity situation. Nominal wheat price has reached or exceeded the highest levels observed in 2008.

In North Sudan some 4 million people are estimated to be food insecure while in South Sudan, people in need of food assistance range between 1.4 to 2.7 million depending on post-referendum developments.

Key Messages

Prices have continued to show an upward trend since December 2010 and remained at very high levels in the subsequent months of 2011. Nominal local rice price may soon approach the level observed in 2008.

Food security situation is particularly worrisome for poor and very poor households in regions hit by weather shocks in 2010. An estimated 3 million people require food aid during the current lean season.

In recent months, wheat prices have shown a downward trend in some major markets such as Kabul and Heart, although remain at very high levels. Prices sharply increased in Kandahar. Nominal rice price may soon approach the level observed in 2008.

Food security conditions are likely to improve thanks to good 2011 main harvest prospects; however conflict affected areas are expected to suffer from food insecurity.

The two waves of floods in recent months have affected over 2 million people in several districts of the country and displaced some 700,000 people.

Key Messages

Food security and livelihoods are threatened by high food prices and persistent conflict and civil unrest which also limit access to food assistance.

Despite the good harvests of the 2010 season, different agencies are extremely concerned about the hunger situation which is reported as alarming or very high.

Insecurity and violence have increased in the last few months as protests in major cities are taking place against the governments.

Key Points

• Alert Level Two (“Alarming”) has been raised over Taal Volcano on 10 April.

• Rido or clan feuds continue to cause sporadic displacements in Maguindanao Province in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

• The UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines agreed to develop an Action Plan to ensure that no children are among the ranks of the New People’s Army or involved in the conflict.

Ukraine sends Relief Goods for Flood Victims

Islamabad 01 May: In order to provide relief assistance to the affectees of floods 2010, government of Ukraine air lifted 387 packages/pieces (RCP) of 13050 Kgs of relief shipment to Pakistan. The Ukranian officials Sergii Levytskyi & Oleksandr Sulim handed over the relief cargo to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Logistic head, Lt Col (Retd) Muhammad Ali Kazi, TI (M) at Chaklala Airbase, Rawalpindi.
