Morocco: H.M. King Mohammed VI donates foodstuff, drugs to flood-stricken people in Settat

RABAT, Nov. 30 - H.M. King Mohammed VI on Friday handed 30 tons of goods and drugs worth two million dirhams (US$ 200,000) to flood-stricken people in Settat.

The Sovereign visited Settat to get informed on the situation of citizens following the recent floods.

Floods struck recently the center and the east of Morocco, crushing buildings, sweeping away trucks. Some 63 people were killed in the floods, according to the latest death toll made public Friday by Moroccan Communication Minister, Nabil Benabdallah. Twenty-six other people were said to be missing.

Although the volcanic activities of Mt Papandayan in the sub district of Cisurupan in West Java have subsided, the alert level remains the same as last week. The Head of Social Bureau Office in Bayongbong at the main Operations Centre reported on Friday (29 Nov.) that some 151 families (628 people) remain in three evacuation posts, and others are spreading out residing with their families and relatives. It is reported that food aid is sufficient.

Morocco's Premier announces construction of dam in flood-hit city

RABAT, Nov.29 - Morocco's Premier, Driss Jettou announced here on Thursday a government plan to build, as of next year, a dam in Mohammedia city, 60 km South Rabat, that was affected by flash floods caused by heavy rain.

Jettou, who was answering questions by heads of parliamentary groups and union's representatives on the government's program said that Karkouz Dam, which will require 230 million dirhams budget (about US$ 23 million), will help pool 30 million cubic meters of El Maleh river.

In Morocco, 20,000 people need immediate assistance after worst floods in 30 years

Twenty thousand people are in need of immediate assistance after heavy rains and floods hit western Morocco, says the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Flash floods, the worst in 30 years, have killed at least 35 people in several provinces on the Atlantic coast of the country. Most of the victims died when their houses, built in river beds, were swept away by flood waters. Another 10 people are still missing.

Flash floods hit Morocco, at least 63 people die

RABAT, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Flash floods have hit several parts of Morocco, killing 63 people with 26 more missing, Communication Minister Nabil Benabdellah said on Friday.

"Some 24 rural houses collapsed totally and 1,334 other housing units suffered cracks," he told reporters.

Unusually heavy rainfall of the previous two weeks caused rivers to overflow in the Gharb and Chaouia, two rich farming areas in western Morocco.

India: Relief in Dhemaji ended, World Vision still in business of rebuilding dreams

World Vision
When the floodwaters swept away the dreams of communities in Dhemaji, thousands of families were forced to flee to safer places, as crops were destroyed, hundreds of cattle killed and huts washed away.
World Vision was among the first organisations to respond to this disaster by rescuing marooned villagers and distributing relief kits to those thousands affected by the flood.

It was on the 24th July 2002 that the Assam Flood Relief Project came into existence. This three-month project aimed at rebuilding the dreams of flood-affected families ended on 31st October 2002.

Russian Fed.: Emergencies Minister studies situation in areas hit by flood

Sergei Shoigu, head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, arrived in the Stavropol Territory in southern Russia on Friday to study the situation in the areas that have suffered from the floods. The Stavropol emergencies commission reported that the head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry intends, in particular, to evaluate on the spot the communal and housing economy's readiness for the winter season in the settlements that were hit by the natural calamity, to check how the tasks in restoring the housing he had set during his previous visit were carried out.

1. Unusual heavy rainfalls on Sunday and Monday 25 November 2002 caused floods in western and central Morocco that left at least 37 deaths. 10 people are still reported missing.

H.M. King Mohammed VI orders immediate assistance to flood victims

CASABLANCA, Nov.28 - H.M. King Mohammed VI ordered the governing board of Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity to bring immediate assistance and funding for those left homeless by flash floods caused by unusual heavy rain that hit the Kingdom for the last ten days.

The Foundation has, so far, brought assistance and emergency funding to 4,000 flood-stricken families, in combined efforts with the ministry of the Interior. Torrential rain and rivers' burst banks claimed the lives of more than 30 and considerable damage in Morocco's rich farming mid-West areas.

SETTAT, Nov.28 - Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity on Wednesday handed out cash to flood victims in Settat, center-western Morocco, where unusual heavy rain and flash floods claimed the lives of more than 30 and considerable material damage.
