Rats, snakes provide little relief in Vietnam's flooded Mekong Delta

by Ben Rowse

TAM NONG, Vietnam, Sept 29 (AFP) - Bountiful supplies of rats, snakes and fish provide some relief for those living in Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta region during the annual flood season.

More often reviled by Western tongues than savoured, rodents are a culinary delight in these parts, while slithering serpents are particularly popular among men for their aphrodisiac qualities.

But the short-term pleasures they offer are little compensation for living in a flood zone where crops, livestock and people are vulnerable to nature's wrath.
