Start of the 2012 Hurricane Season Reinforces the Need to be Prepared

The 2012 Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1 in countries with coastlines and maritime territories on the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and will last until November 30. The most affected region is usually the Caribbean where they also experience tropical storms, cyclones and floods. PAHO/WHO makes an appeal to review and activate the contingency plans for these events, which can cause considerable damage to the communities in the Region.

NEW DELHI (AlertNet) - A new initiative to spread information on adapting to climate change across South Asia will encourage farmers, scientists and policy makers to share effective ways of dealing with the impacts of global warming.

South Asia is home to one fifth of the world's population and is vulnerable to climate extremes, experiencing seasonal floods, cyclones and droughts that ravage vast swathes of agricultural land each year.

US$400,000 to build storm-proof houses in Danang

The Danang municipal People’s Committee has approved a US$400,000 project to build storm-resistant houses for residents living in high risk areas for natural disasters.

The project, assisted by the US Rockefeller Foundation, will be implemented in eight communes in Son Tra, Lien Chieu, Ngu Hanh Son, and Hoa Vang districts. It aims to strengthen the capacity of communes and districts that are frequently affected by floods to cope with the situation, adapt to climate change, manage risks, and prepare for natural disasters in order to reduce their negative impacts.

ADB increases funding for Vietnam's typhoon-damaged areas

CPV: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on December 8 said that is it providing a 25.5 million USD supplementary financing to an existing emergency assistance loan to Vietnam for the rehabilitation of rural infrastructure severely damaged by typhoons and storms in 2005.

The project was initially approved in 2006 by ADB with a loan of 50.97 million USD. However, high inflation has increased the cost of civil works, materials, and labor. Additional damage to rural infrastructure caused by typhoons in 2006 and 2007 has contributed to significant cost overruns.
