ISTANBUL, Turkey, 24 March 2017 – Hundreds of delegates are heading to Istanbul for Europe’s top disaster risk reduction forum, two months before a global conference takes aim at natural and human-induced hazards.
Currently chaired by Turkey, a leader in the field, the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction runs from Sunday to Tuesday and is set to draw 500 participants.

MEXICO CITY, 22 March 2017 – Mexico City’s devastating, 8.1-magnitude earthquake of 1985 was a stark illustration of the disaster risks faced by the health sector, but it also triggered what became a global effort to protect hospitals from hazards.
After a tremor of 70 seconds, quake damage had reduced Mexico’s hospital capacity by 5,000 beds, sowing chaos in the emergency system at the precise moment that it was most need.

Description of the disaster
An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude hit north-west Tanzania, Kagera region, on September 10 2016 at about 15:27 hours local East African time (12:27 GMT). The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be about 44 km from Bukoba town, which is located on the shores of Lake Victoria, near the border with Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda. It was reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km and was categorized as being shallow. Shallow earthquakes are viewed to have a greater impact.

BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Natural disasters affected 1.15 million people in China in February, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said Tuesday.
Natural disasters led to economic losses worth 480 million yuan (69.4 million U.S. dollars) and over 100 people were relocated, the ministry said.
In February natural disasters included freezing weather, snowstorms and drought, as well as earthquakes, landslides, and forest fires.
Over 2,000 houses were damaged and 76,300 hectares of crops affected.

On March 10, in Ecuador, Volunteers of Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation held a groundbreaking ceremony in Canoa for the reconstruction of a church destroyed in the earthquake last year. Archbishop Monsignor Lorenzo was in attendance to bless the event held and thanks to the efforts of Tzu Chi and local residents, a wonderful celebration was brought to fruition.
Under the bright sun, nearly 500 Canoa residents and special guests are attending the groundbreaking ceremony for church reconstruction. That means the beginning of Tzu Chi’s long-term project in Ecuador.
This systematic review, commissioned by the Humanitarian Evidence Programme and carried out by a team from the EPPI-Centre, University College London (UCL), draws together primary research on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programmes for people affected by humanitarian crises in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A Monday evening earthquake that measured 5.8 on the Richter scale destroyed three buildings in Taikkyi, Yangon Region. There were many minor injuries but no reported deaths, local authorities said yesterday.
The temblor began to shake buildings in Yangon at about 8:50pm. The moderate earthquake with a depth of about 10 kilometers had its epicenter in Taikkyi, 69 kilometers northeast of the city of Yangon and the northernmost township in Yangon Region, according to the US Geological Survey.
