Zimbabwe: helping prison authorities improve nutrition

In April 2009, the ICRC launched an emergency assistance operation to improve the nutritional situation in Zimbabwe prisons. Therapeutic feeding programmes for acutely malnourished prisoners and general food distributions to prevent further malnourishment allowed malnutrition rates to drop sharply. For over a year, the ICRC has continued to work with Zimbabwe Prison Service (ZPS) to improve the diet of prisoners and ensure monitoring of the situation. Prisoners and ZPS officers in Masvingo prison describe the remarkable improvements they've experienced.

HARARE/JOHANNESBURG, 30 December 2010 (IRIN) - The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) staffed jointly by officials from Zambia and Zimbabwe, says one of the two major dams on the river between the two countries will open its flood gates in early 2011, meaning that communities may have to be relocated.

"ZRA has issued the alert, but they have not yet informed us of the dates on when they will open the gates," said Patrick Kangwa, head of operations at Zambia's Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit.

Zimbabweans Rush for Documents Before S. Africa Deportation Deadline

Thousands of Zimbabweans living in South Africa are trying to legalize their stay before Friday. The South African government says after this deadline it will begin deporting Zimbabweans without documents but those who can prove they have begun the registration process will not be expelled.

Large crowds of Zimbabweans were lined up outside South African Home Affairs offices on the eve of the expiration of a special dispensation (exception) that for the past 18 months had allowed them to work without documents in South Africa.

Officials said lines were long but manageable.

In Brief: Donors pledge support for Zimbabwe's poorest in 2011

OHANNESBURG, 27 December 2010 (IRIN) - An informal group of developed countries has pledged to continue to back programmes in Zimbabwe worth more than US$500 million in 2011 to help the poor, but says "serious concerns remain" on the "protection of fundamental rights, the rule of law, governance and respect for agreements".

President Robert Mugabe is expected to announce a date for national elections in 2011, according to local media, but NGOs and human rights activists fear they could lead to a surge of political violence.
