Translating research into policy: lessons learned from eclampsia treatment and malaria control in three southern African countries

Report
BioMed Central
Abstract (provisional)

Background

Little is known about the process of knowledge translation in low- and middle-income countries. We studied policymaking processes in Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe to understand the factors affecting the use of research evidence in national policy development, with a particular focus on the findings from randomized control trials (RCTs). We examined two cases: the use of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) in the treatment of eclampsia in pregnancy (a clinical case); and the use of insecticide treated bed nets and indoor residual household spraying

Zimbabwe's economy has contracted every year since 1997, but is expected to grow 4.7 percent this year, after the

New crop skills aim to beat Zimbabwe hunger

Report
Tearfund
It's raining in Zimbabwe but no one is complaining.

It's badly needed, evidenced by the dry grass which is steadily turning from brown to green as the soil is refreshed.

Farmers are now busily getting their seeds in the soil in the hope of maximising the crops that'll keep them and their families alive.

Tearfund is funding local partners to help such work. The challenge of shortages in seeds, fertiliser, cattle for ploughing and tools, mean they are having to teach new skills in still very difficult circumstances.

One partner, River of Life, is training

Botswana/Zimbabwe: Cross-border shoppers disappear

Report
IRIN
FRANCISTOWN, 17 December 2009 (IRIN) - Relative silence has replaced the bustle that Francistown, on the border between Botswana and Zimbabwe, used to experience during the peak shopping period at Christmas.

For the past decade the town has been the first port of call for Zimbabweans, who were unable to source necessities from basic foodstuffs to petrol and even soap in their own country, and relied on their neighbour for most things.

This year there is a marked shift in commercial activity, and the hawkers in the Francistown bus terminus are

Major diamond retailers: Act now to stop Zimbabwe blood diamonds

Letter to Tiffany & Co, Zale, Cartier and Major Diamond Retailers

Dear Sir:

I am writing to urge your company to publicly commit to not purchase or sell diamonds from Zimbabwe.

Throughout 2009, Human Rights Watch conducted field-based research in the diamond fields of Marange, in eastern Zimbabwe. We found that mining under the supervision of the police and then the military resulted in the use of forced labor of adults and children, killings, and severe beatings. By any reasonable assessment, diamonds from Marange are
