Seven more reported drowned in Zimbabwean floods

Harare_(dpa) _ Seven people have been swept away by floods in central Zimbabwe, bringing the death toll from recent heavy rains to at least 21, reports said Friday.

The seven were swept away Thurday by the flooded Chamakarara River in Masvingo, said the daily Herald.

They were travelling on the back of a truck that tried to cross the river.

At least 21 people are known to have died since the start of the rainy season in Zimbabwe. One of the worst affected areas is Muzarabani in northern Zimbabwe where heavy rains are reported to have devastated 43 villages. dpa rt ds

Nine dead in Zimbabwean floods

Harare/Johannesburg_(dpa) _ At least nine people have drowned across Zimbabwe after several days of heavy rain caused flooding in many parts of the country, reports said Friday.

Most of the deaths have been in the low-lying districts of southern Masvingo province, where people have drowned in flooded rivers following heavy downpours, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported.

"In Masvingo, the floods struck parts of Chiredzi and Chivi districts where they left a trail of destruction," said Sibusisiwe Ndlovu, the deputy director of the Civil Protection Unit.

Mozambique-Zimbabwe: Flood death toll rises

JOHANNESBURG, 21 December 2007 (IRIN) - Floodwaters in central Mozambique have displaced at least 100 families and the death toll in neighbouring Zimbabwe has risen to at least nine as heavy rains lashed the neighbouring southern African countries, according to media reports.

Sergio Moiane, administrator of the district of Buzi in Sofala Province, in central Mozambique, told local media at least 100 families had been evacuated from their homes in the low-lying area of Bandua after experiencing consistently heavy rainfall since 7 December.

Flooding leaves some 1,000 families homeless in northeastern Zimbabwe

Washington - Around 1,000 Zimbabwean families are estimated to have been left homeless in the Muzarabani district of Mashonaland Central Province in the wake of heavy floods there, an official with the International Red Cross said Thursday.

The homeless have been moved to higher ground, but the deluge has claimed at least three lives, the official and news reports said. The national meteorological service said more flooding may occur in the next two weeks, raising fears of a widening impact.

Thousands homeless after Zimbabwe floods

HARARE, Dec 19, 2007 (AFP) - Some 600 families have been left homeless in a remote area of north-eastern Zimbabwe after floods washed away buildings and crops as well as disrupting power supplies, a state daily reported Wednesday.

A violent storm which pounded the area last Thursday and Friday swept away livestock including goats, pigs and sheep, poultry, clothes,blankets, furniture and other household goods, The Herald reported.

Zimbabwe: Country braces for another round of flooding

HARARE, 19 December 2007 (IRIN) - The Zimbabwe government's emergency assistance arm, the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), is moving hundreds of people to higher ground and advising others to do likewise in the wake of flooding that has claimed three lives and resulted in a fourth person being listed as missing.

More rain has been forecast across Zimbabwe after a two-week deluge flooded low-lying areas in the Muzarabani district of Mashonaland Central Province, in the north of the country.

Zimbabwe floods declared a national disaster

HARARE - The Zimbabwe government has declared floods that have hit Muzarabani district in the Zambezi valley a national disaster.

At least three people have died while over a thousand villagers have been displaced from their homes following the heavy downpours that hit the district since early December.

Hundreds of houses and schools as well as livestock have also been swept away.

State radio said on Tuesday the government had declared the flooded district a disaster zone to allow resources to be channeled towards the district.
