Zimbabwe: Yearender - chronology of an unremitting crisis

Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 30 December (IRIN) - If last year Zimbabweans thought life could not get any tougher, 2003 disabused them of that faint hope.
Ordinary people struggled to cope through interlinked humanitarian, economic and political crises that provided no let up, deepening their poverty and vulnerability.

Record levels of inflation daily eroded people's ability to provide for their families, while under funded public services -including the once impressive health and education systems - fell into even faster decline.

Humanitarian agencies warn that more

Suspected ebola case in prime Zimbabwean resort at Victoria Falls

Harare (dpa) - Zimbabwean health officials asked South African laboratories for help to investigate a suspected ebola case in the country's most popular tourist resort at Victoria Falls.

Media reports quoted Health minister David Parirenyatwa as saying that an Angolan cross border trader had died from the ebola fever virus.

Parirenyatwa said he had asked South African laboratories to help to confirm the suspected virus infection, and specimens had been already sent to be assessed.

The trader had crossed into Zimbabwe

Southern Africa: FAO programmes assist HIV/AIDS-affected households

HIV/AIDS is taking an increasing toll on human life, severely affecting the agricultural labour force.
Agricultural skills are lost. Agricultural production and income are dramatically reduced. FAO is continuously adapting its interventions to assist the vulnerable agricultural households affected by this pandemic. In collaboration with other humanitarian partners, FAO is opting for an integrated and multi-sectoral approach.

There is a growing understanding that existing humanitarian programmes and frameworks require readjustment to

Outlook for crop growing conditions in Southern Africa for 2003/2004

Issued December 23, 2003
Seasonal cumulative satisfaction of maize water requirements is poorly correlated with early season rainfall. Scant early rains do not necessarily imply poor crop production for the 2003-04 season. Statistical interpretations of climate forecasts suggest that near-normal end-of-season maize crop water conditions are likely. Western Zimbabwe and Northern Namibia have below normal forecasts. Prospects for the season will come more clearly into focus by the end of January, once the quality of the December-January rains is known.

Zimbabwe: Therapeutic feeding centres serve as havens for the hungry

Rosemary is 21 months old. Her body is wasted and she lies motionless on the bed. Her small, lacklustre eyes seek reassurance from her grandmother, Museuu Gumbo, lying next to her. She and her twin brother, Previ, lost their mother in August, and are being raised by Gumbo, who cares for their brother, age four, who plays in a nearby room. She has brought the sick children to Mpilo Hospital's Therapeutic Feeding Centre, where hopefully Rosemary and Previ, who suffer from acute malnutrition, will recover.

Bleak Christmas ahead for Zimbabwe's hungry

JOHANNESBURG - More than 2.6 million people in Zimbabwe will face a bleak Christmas this year after having had their food rations halved because of insufficient donations from the international community, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said Monday.
"It's tragic that these ration cuts have come at a time when people are normally celebrating the festive season, but if we're not given food or cash by donors, then we're simply unable to meet their food needs," said Mike Sackett, WFP Regional Director for Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe still waits in vain for rain

Report
IFRC
The three siblings have prepared their plot for the planting season. It is almost one acre and they are proud of their work. Still, they have not been able to plant the maize seeds they received from the Red Cross in October, because the soil is not wet enough to nurture the plants. Like many others in Zimbabwe, they are waiting for the rain.
Fortune, 23, Lovejoy, 15, and Indra, 11, live on their own in the district of Zvimba, just west of Harare. The mother of the oldest two died from AIDS in 1993, and then their father married their aunt who came to take care of the family.

Southern Africa: South African maize too expensive for WFP

Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 18 December (IRIN) - Increasing maize prices in South Africa, partly due to drought and currency fluctuations, have forced the WFP to look to foreign markets to procure food aid for its emergency operation in Southern Africa.
"It's unfortunate that South Africa may be heading into drought at a time when Southern Africa has a huge need for food," Mike Sackett, WFP Southern Africa Regional Director, said in a statement.

WFP had sourced "substantial amounts of maize from the South African market over the last 18 months to feed

Zimbabwe: Farmers decry lack of inputs, equipment losses

Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 18 December (IRIN) - The ongoing lack of agricultural inputs and a new law that allows the government to "compulsorily acquire" farm equipment have been slammed by Zimbabwe's Commercial Farmers Union (CFU).
According to the newly gazetted Statutory Instrument, the government can identify, value and "compulsorily acquire" any farm equipment or material, not currently being used for agricultural purposes, on any agricultural land.

The CFU hit out at the new regulation, and the lack of agricultural inputs available for the planting season this
