Thousands of cattle die in drought-ravaged Zimbabwe: report

HARARE, Jan 1 (AFP) - Around 15,000 cattle have starved to death in drought-ravaged southern Zimbabwe, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported Wednesday.

The death of the cattle, which the paper said occurred over the last three months, is likely to compound a famine here that threatens eight million of the country's 11.6 million people.

The Herald, quoting the country's top government veterinarian, said farmers in the area had refused to destock in the hope that summer rains would restore grazing.

"They have, however, not been lucky,

Southern Africa food prospects for 2003 gloomy: Grain SA

JOHANNESBURG, Dec 31 (AFP) - Food prospects look bleak for southern Africa in 2003 as low rainfall limited maize production this year, Grain South Africa warned in its year-end message.

"Given the serious production issues experienced in the countries to the north of us -- Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi -- it stands to reason that there should be serious concern within the whole of southern Africa about the food availability prospects for next year," said Steve Shone, general manager of Grain SA, which represents about 95 percent of South African commercial grain farmers.

Tanzania donates 3,000 tonnes of maize to Zimbabwe

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 31 (AFP) - Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa has donated 3,000 tonnes of maize to famine-hit Zimbabwe, a statement from the prime minister's office said here Tuesday.

The statement said the minister of state in the prime minister's office, William Lukuvi, will on behalf of Mkapa hand over the donation on Tuesday to Zimbabwean authorities in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

Several southern African countries, including Zimbabwe, face serious food shortages due to various reasons including drought, floods, civil wars and bad governance.

Health in Emergencies Issue 15, Dec 2002

Health intelligence in emergencies: which information and why?
by Paul Ickx, Management Services for Health, AHSEP

In mid-1999, almost 1,800 million people were living in countries at severe risk of, affected by or emerging from armed conflicts. The "complexity" of these emergencies does not end when a formal cease fire is signed or political elections are held. On the contrary, the transition is a particularly difficult and fragile situation. For instance, in Afghanistan like in other post-conflict countries,

Southern Africa: Hunger crisis set to worsen in 2003 despite fresh donations

JOHANNESBURG - In response to warnings that a worsening humanitarian crisis is on the horizon in southern Africa next year, the international donor community has contributed vital funds to the UN World Food Programme (WFP) that will help save millions of lives across the region in the coming months.
Fresh end-of-year contributions, totaling more than US$ 25.2 million, have lifted WFP's emergency operation out of a weeks-long funding slump. With the new donations, the largest from Japan, the African Development Bank (ADB), Germany and Canada, the operation is now 62 percent resourced.

Zimbabwe imports maize seed from South Africa

Harare, Zimbabwe (PANA) - Zimbabwe has ordered 15,000 tons of maize seed from South Africa to bridge a domestic shortfall in the current farming season, Agriculture Minister Joseph Made said Friday.
Zimbabwe is experiencing a severe shortage of maize seed and key farming inputs such as fertiliser, which threatens to disrupt cropping and the government's controversial agrarian reforms.

A government agency announced Tuesday that land under the cultivation of maize, the country's staple food, was inadequate, with almost half the farming season already spent.

Zimbabwe: Poverty driving rural Zimbabweans to desperate measures

Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 24 December (IRIN) - The poverty that has accompanied Zimbabwe's economic crisis has driven many desperate rural people to prostitution, robbery and gold panning to survive, the latest Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) report said.
"Cross border trading with neighbours Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana is also on the increase as households try to find any way they can to make ends meet," the report said.

With maize and wheat being sold at eight times the government-set price, and oil, salt and rice prices escalating,

Southern Africa Appeal - Hunger and resilience in Zimbabwe

In June, CAFOD's programme officer in Southern Africa told us that, if we didn't act straight away, the food crisis in Southern Africa would escalate out of control before Christmas.
Thanks to your overwhelming generosity, CAFOD has raised more than =A31.8 million since then to help partners respond to the growing emergency in the region. In Zimbabwe, supplementary feeding programmes reached 360,000 people across 11 districts in November alone.

So what is the situation like in Southern Africa as Christmas approaches?

Protecting livelihoods during drought: some demand-side approaches

This report by Christopher Eldridge
23 December 2002 (HPN) - The history of food crises includes a history of famines that did not occur. Drawing on the experiences of the 1992 drought in Southern Africa, Christopher Eldridge argues that an understanding of the methods people used to avert famine then - notably food purchase - could usefully inform today's response

Ten years ago, in 1992, the worst drought in around half a century struck Southern Africa. But there was no famine, largely because of the activities of those people who were most affected,

Towards a Southern African solution

This report by Donald Mavunduse
23 December 2002 (HPN) - The crisis in Southern Africa calls for urgency and forward thinking. Donald Mavunduse argues that no durable solution is in prospect until the limitations of the current relief response are acknowledged and overcome

The crisis in Southern Africa is both massive and complex, far outstripping current capacities to assist. The emergency is much greater than a simple food deficit: it includes a health crisis, with millions affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as a crisis of poverty,
