Louder than words: An agenda for action to end state use of child soldiers

The report “Louder than words: An agenda for action to end state use of child soldiers” is published to mark the tenth anniversary year of the entry into force of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict. It examines the record of states in protecting children from use in hostilities by their own forces and by state-allied armed groups. It finds that, while governments’ commitment to ending child soldier use is high, the gap between commitment and practice remains wide.

SANA’A, June 15 – The six-month long uprisings in Yemen has reverted the lives of many African refuges in the country back to a similar hell that forced them from their home countries. Since the dramatic developments in Yemen began, many have lost their jobs and their lives are now at risk.

The total population of refugees in Yemen who are registered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) exceeds 200,000. Most have come from Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea because of political conflicts in those countries.

Desert locust situation update 19 Jun 2009: Desert locust swarms persist in Ethiopia and N Somalia

In Ethiopia, no new swarms have arrived from northern Somalia since 10 June but there are about a dozen swarms reported in the country. Many of the swarms split into smaller swarmlets and groups that have moved into the Somali region (Shinile and Jijiga zones), Dire Dawa, Oromiya (E. and W. Haraghe zones), Harari, and the central Rift Valley in Afar (zones 3 and 5). A small swarm moved into the northern highlands (North Wello) on 9 June and reached southern Tigray on the 12th. Grant assistance for underprivileged farmers in the Palestinian territories, Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia through the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization)

The Government of Japan has decided to provide a total of 420 million yen for two projects of Grant Assistance for Underprivileged Farmers through the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Notes to this effect were exchanged on July 31 (Tue) (Japan Time) between Mr. Yuji Nakamura, Japanese Ambassador to Italy, and Mr. David Harcharik, Deputy Director-General of FAO in Rome.

SUDAN: Relief agencies to leave Kassala
The Sudanese government has asked non-governmental relief organisations to temporarily suspend activities in the eastern border town of Kassala. The state minister of relief, Chol Deng, was reported by the state media as saying the move was necessary for security reasons. A large number of local, non-governmental and international aid agencies work in Kassala, near the Eritrean border, providing assistance for thousands of refugees at a number of camps.

HORN OF AFRICA: Gulf states join livestock ban
Six Gulf states have banned livestock imports from eight Horn and east African countries following the first outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) outside Africa. Saudi Arabia initially imposed the ban last week. It has since been joined by Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates. The disease has reportedly killed at least 55 people in Yemen and Saudi Arabia and "devastated herds of livestock", according to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
