Highlights

Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons - In the past year, the movement of people within their country, and from one country or even continent to another has continued to rise. According to UNHCR (06/10) there were over 43 million forcibly displaced people worldwide at the end of 2009, which is the highest number since the mid-1990s. Out of these, about 15 million were refugees and 27 million were internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Multilateral Aid Review: Ensuring maximum value for money for UK aid through multilateral organisations

Executive Summary

1. The Multilateral Aid Review was commissioned to assess the value for money for UK aid of funding through multilateral organisations. Forty-three organisations were assessed. Nine were deemed to offer very good value for money, sixteen to offer good value for money, nine to offer adequate value for money, and nine to offer poor value for money for UK aid.

2. The organisations covered by the review ranged from multilateral development banks to UN specialised agencies, and from development finance institutions to humanitarian organisations.

Improving the Academic Performance and Nutrition of Children in Gaza

From October 2009 to June 2010, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development is partnering with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to provide daily school lunches/snacks to approximately 6,200 children attending 8 elementary and preparatory schools in Gaza. This project is helping to improve the overall nutritional status of the children, as well as their academic performance.

Qatar Charity spends Q.R. 4.600.000 on Iftaar project

Doha, Nov. 11th, 2008 - During Ramadan 1429 A.H., Qatar Charity carried out Iftaar (fast breaking) project in 19 countries outside the State of Qatar. Around 235159 families benefitted from this project which was carried out in the most needful countries. The Charity applied the most developed mechanisms and quality services. The total cost amounted to Q.R. 4.628.426.

The project demonstrated a noticeable increase (Q.R. 800.000) over the previous year. The increase rate of expenditures on this project reached 90% compared with Q.R. 2.600.000 of the year 2006.
