Global: How not to fight over scarce resources

JOHANNESBURG, 1 December 2009 (IRIN) - In all the talk about adapting to climate change, "scant attention" is being paid to "the dangers of ... [adaptation strategies] going astray in fragile and conflict-affected" countries, warned a report released on 28 November.

Just under three billion people live in 46 conflict-affected countries, where climate change could create a high risk of violent conflict, said International Alert, a peace-building NGO, which highlighted the number in its 2007 report, A Climate of Conflict.

Iraq and Yemen: Minister of State for Overseas Development Peter Power announces €700,000 for de-mining and emergency humanitarian supplies

Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power, today announced funding of €700,000 for de-mining in Iraq and emergency humanitarian assistance for Yemen. The funding will be provided through Irish Aid, the Government's programme of overseas development.

A total of €500,000 has been granted to the Mines Advisory Group to support their de-mining work in the northern Governorates of Iraq. Four decades of conflict have left the area heavily-contaminated with tactical minefields, unexploded ordnance, small arms and light weapons.

A further €200,000 will be provided

Udhiyah campaign report for 2008

Afghanistan

In Kabul, Laghman, and Nangahar, 763 families received packages of fresh Udhiyah meat.

Iraq

Over 10,000 pounds of fresh meat was distributed to 2,300 poor Iraqi families, as well as a number of orphans, in the provinces of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, and Mosul.

Jordan

Udhiyah meat was distributed to 580 families living in Palestinian refugee camps and isolated rural villages.

Lebanon

In the governorates of Tripoli and Sidon LIFE distributed Udhiyah meat to 130 needy families.

Guterres urges Arab League to play greater role in UNHCR's work
