Yemen: Education Cluster Activities Updated (as of 31 May 2013)

The goal of the Education Cluster is to enable a predictable, well coordinated response that addresses the education concerns of populations affected by humanitarian crises. The cluster promotes education in a humanitarian crisis by strengthening the capacity and preparedness of humanitarian personnel and government authorities to assess needs, identify priorities, and coordinate a response. The Education Cluster was established in 2007 as part of the cluster approach.

ACTED’s wide-ranging programmes to re-build livelihoods in Yemen

ACTED is conducting wide-ranging programmes in Yemen, covering all aspects of people’s daily lives to improve and re-build their livelihoods. ACTED has been mobilised to set up and implement cash grants, water, sanitation, health (WASH) as well as hygiene trainings and food security programmes. These projects have all been supported by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department.

Abo Ghanim School sits in a valley shaded by a series of rocky outcrops in the bustling port city of Aden in southern Yemen. It is here that Nabil Salem Abubaker, 54, has lived with his wife and seven children for the past year. They sleep in a classroom in one part of the school, while students attend classes in the other rooms.

USAID Supports Critical Needs of Political Transition

With an infusion of $20 million in new funding from USAID, gaps in Yemen’s political transition will be met sooner rather than later. With this funding, critical needs of the National Dialogue will be supported, a new biometric voter registration system will be put in place, and the Early Grade Reading program will be amplified.

Al Amal Training Center Opens in Yemen

Today, the Al Amal Training Center opened in Sana’a. This workforce training center will work with young men and women aged 18-30, offering lessons in how to establish a small business and how to manage financial and marketing to strengthen that business. Youth will also learn English and computer skills, making them more marketable in the job market and more attractive to potential investors. Finally, as entrepreneurial skills must be complemented by access to capital, Al Amal Microfinance Bank (AMB) will provide graduates of the training center no-collateral, low- and no-interest loans.

Yemen Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 30 April 2013)

Over 182,000 IDPs have returned so far, of which about 146,000 are in 11 districts of Abyan Governorate. About 322,444 IDPs continue to be displaced in the north (Sana’a included) and only 36,845 returnees to Sa’ada Governorate. Ethiopian migrants with the hope of crossing over to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continue to migrate into Yemen.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

  • More than 87 percent of IDPs in southern Yemen have returned to areas of origin since July 2012 as a result of improved security conditions, according to the U.N. However, less than 11 percent of IDPs in northern Yemen have returned home due to protracted insecurity. A lack of basic services is an issue in both northern and southern areas.

  • A 7.8 earthquake hit South-Eastern Iran on 16 April, close to the border with Pakistan. The impact was felt in both countries, with 14 people killed, 73 injured and two missing.

  • New and worsening humanitarian crises since 2011 have led to a considerable increase in CERF allocations to the MENA region. The largest recipients have been Pakistan, Syria and Yemen.

Yemen: ICRC operations continue countrywide amid heightened tensions

The long-awaited National Dialogue Conference was successfully launched in Sana’a on 18 March. Meanwhile, political tensions, economic insecurity, social unrest and conflict continued to seriously affect all sectors of the population, leaving the poverty-stricken extremely vulnerable. . In order to be able to assist those in need, it is essential that the neutral, impartial and independent nature of aid agencies' humanitarian work, including that of the ICRC, be respected at all times.
