Food Gets Girls In School In Yemen

Ali Mohamed Ghaleb’s five daughters give him a special interest in supporting the innovative Food For Girls’ Education Programme that WFP has been operating in Yemen since 2007. The 44-year-old retired military officer says it helps him keep them in school

Yemen Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 30 April 2013)

Over 182,000 IDPs have returned so far, of which about 146,000 are in 11 districts of Abyan Governorate. About 322,444 IDPs continue to be displaced in the north (Sana’a included) and only 36,845 returnees to Sa’ada Governorate. Ethiopian migrants with the hope of crossing over to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continue to migrate into Yemen.

  • Every Saturday and Wednesday, nearly 50,000 children in Aden Governorate in the south, are denied access to their schools. The pro-separatist movement known as Al-Hirak has called for ‘civil disobedience’ in the governorate to draw attention to their demands. Through this, many schools are forced to close, while staff and students risk attack or intimidation.

RCA allocates over Dh 4 million to implement developmental projects

The Higher Committee of Foreign aid at the Red Crescent Authority has allocated Dh 4.027 million to carry out developmental projects in a number of countries.

The assistance will cover health, education and social services sectors in addition to the provision of water supplies in areas which suffer from shortage of this vital service.

These projects will be carried out in a number of countries, including Palestine, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Jordan and Pakistan, Senegal, Bosnia, Uganda, Benin, Thailand, Chad, in addition to Ghana, Lebanon, Libya and Mauritania.

New Learn-to-Read Method in Yemen Shows Early Promise

A teacher points to clearly-drawn Arabic characters on a blackboard and the third-grade girls at Aisha School gleefully make the corresponding sounds. A few minutes later the room grows quieter as the girls focus to simultaneously pronounce and write the letter corresponding to its sound. At a nearby school, first-grade boys stumble over themselves to get to the blackboard in time to point at the character that matches the sound their teacher just pronounced.

UNICEF Yemen Situation Report - Reporting period: March 2013

Highlights:

  • 1,036 of the most vulnerable and conflict affected children were given birth certificates during a rapid birth registration campaign in Aden Governorate, South Yemen.

  • An additional 228 outpatient therapeutic care programmes (OTPs) have been opened so far in 2013 for the treatment of children with severe and moderate acute malnutrition, including 34 in Sa’ada, North Yemen.

  • Over 22,675 people are being served by 7 new water pumping sets installed in Abyan and Lahj, South Yemen.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

· The Republic of Yemen Government (RoYG) and representatives of various Yemeni political groups met on March 18 to begin National Dialogue talks. The six-month, U.N.-backed process seeks to address Yemen’s political rifts and facilitate both the creation of a new constitution and successful 2014 elections. Several pro-autonomy and pro-secessionist groups in southern Yemen have refused to participate in the process, while thousands of people continue to protest against the talks in the southern city of Aden.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

  • On March 7, the fifth Ministerial Friends of Yemen meeting was held in London. Foreign ministers and delegations from approximately 30 countries attended the meeting, including U.S. Department of State Deputy Secretary William Burns. Meeting participants discussed a number of topics, including the need for continued humanitarian support for IDP and refugee populations. The 2013 YHRP requests $716 million and aims to provide assistance to 7.7 million vulnerable people in Yemen.

Hundreds of schools currently being rebuilt

During the revolution, armed militias and government forces used hundreds of children’s schools as barracks and firing points. When the soldiers and militiamen left, the schools were left in complete disrepair, some destroyed entirely. Now, nearly two years later, 380 of those schools have been repaired.

Highlights:

  • 35,794 vulnerable displaced and conflict affected children (boys: 15,597, girls: 20,197) were provided psychosocial support in Abyan, Aden, Al Dhale'e and Lahj (South Yemen), Amran, Hajjah and Sa'ada (North), Amanat Al Asimah, Sana'a and Taiz Governorates (Central/West).

  • The UNICEF WASH team is working with other cluster partners in preparedness for the upcoming World Water Day (March 22nd 2013).
