Ministry of Education and International Partners Jointly Seek to Increase Access to Schools

SANA’A, September 14 - On September 17, more than seven million Yemeni girls and boys should have been back to school. In addition, it is expected that about 800 thousand children will be enrolled in the first primary grade, according to the Ministry of Education.

Yemen: The Second National Millennium Development Goals Report

Preface:

The second Millennium Development Goals Report (2010) is launched to assess the level of progress towards achieving the MDGs after a decade of the UN Millennium Summit held in September 2000, which was attended by His Excellency, Mr. Ali Abdullah Saleh, President of the Republic of Yemen. Since then, the Government has implemented a number of development plans and strategies at the macro and sectoral levels including the second Five Year Development Plan (2001-05), Poverty Reduction Strategy, the third National Development Plan for Poverty Reduction (2006-2010)

Yemen, Donors talk on refugees situations

SANA'A, March 09 (Saba) - Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of National Committee for Refugees Affairs Ali Mothana held Tuesday talks with a delegation of Donors visiting Yemen currently on refugees situation in the country.

During the meeting, Mothana expressed Yemen's appreciation of the exerted efforts by the donors in to assist the government to cope with the problems of refugees' influx into Yemen and in the relief areas for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the province of Saada.

Yemen, KSA coordination council kicks off 19th round

RIYADH, Feb. 28 (Saba)- Meetings of the 19th round of the Yemeni-Saudi Coordination Council started Sunday in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, co-chaired by Prime Minister Ali Mujawar and Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Premier, Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.

In the opening session, Prime Minister Mujawar expressed thanks for Saudis for hosting this round in Riyadh, conveying greetings of President Ali Abdullah Saleh to Saudi King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and the Saudi government and people for supporting Yemen stability and development process.

Education status report:challenges and opportunities

Overview

This report is motivated by two main considerations. First, after three decades of Yemen’s impressive continuous expansion of education, the time is ripe to assess the outcomes of its education system and document its strengths and challenges. Second, in the long run, Yemen is poised to be more integrated in the regional and global economy. At this juncture, it is only wise to reflect on whether the recipes that have enabled past successes will be sufficient and relevant to sustain these successes and to build on them to take up looming new challenges.

Realizing MDGs in Yemen needs $48.4 bln program: report

SANA'A, Feb. 27 (Saba) - A report revealed on Saturday that realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Yemen needs carrying out a rehabilitation program worth $48.4 billion.

The report was prepared by the Yemeni government and UN organizations and presented to the meeting of the working group of Yemen and donors in charge of identifying Yemen's development needs and follow up projects' implementation being held currently in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Yemen: Heavy rainfall causes flooding in Aden

ADEN, Feb. 27 (Saba)- A heavy rainfall storm lasted for more than five hours in Aden governorate caused a small rockslide, floods, shutting down schools and cutting electricity and water supplies.

Secretary General of Aden Local Council Abdul-Kareem al-Shaief visited a number of sites affected by the influx of torrential rains and a housed burned up by a candle during the power cut.

Al-Shaief also visited a number of archaeological sites and listened to a detailed explanation by the director of Aden Cisterns Khaled Rabati who noted that such a heavy rains storm has not occurred

Yemen poverty assessment: Volume I - Main report

The Government of Yemen in collaboration with World Bank and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the "Yemen Poverty Assessment Report" on December 3rd, 2007 in a meeting held at the Central Organization for Audit and Control. The launch was attended by more than 250 participants representing high ranking government officials, the donor community, Parliament and Shura Council members, academia, civil society organization and the media.
