Since April 7, Yemeni authorities have released 1,620 migrants who were held by smugglers in farms – some of them for months – in Haradh region, in the north of the country. Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is assisting these migrants, including 62 children and 142 women, and has referred 71 severely ill people to the MSF-run hospital in Al-Mazraq village, close to Haradh town.

MSF receives reassurance from Yemen Ministry of Health to continue its medical activities in Aden emergency hospital

London, 11 March 2013 – The MSF emergency hospital in the Sheikh Othman District of Aden has received reassurance of the full support of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoH) and the Governor of Aden to continue its medical services for the community.

On 5 March a local newspaper reported that MSF would have to close down its emergency services in the hospital.

Patrick Wieland, MSF country representative, met with the MoH office director in Aden Dr. Al-Kader Lassor on 9 March, who spoke on behalf of the Governor.

MSF treats 39 injured as violence affects the south of Yemen

On February 21, MSF teams in Aden and Al Daleh in southern Yemen tended to 39 people who had been injured during outbreaks of violence connected to national elections. A local separatist movement boycotted the vote, which led to clashes in the south, particularly in Aden, the region’s main city.

MSF supported three hospitals in Aden by deploying medical and surgical teams and financially supporting health care for the wounded. The three hospitals admitted a total of 37 people on Tuesday.
