Highlights

  • Every Saturday and Wednesday, nearly 50,000 children in Aden Governorate in the south, are denied access to their schools. The pro-separatist movement known as Al-Hirak has called for ‘civil disobedience’ in the governorate to draw attention to their demands. Through this, many schools are forced to close, while staff and students risk attack or intimidation.

UNICEF Yemen Situation Report - Reporting period: March 2013

Highlights:

  • 1,036 of the most vulnerable and conflict affected children were given birth certificates during a rapid birth registration campaign in Aden Governorate, South Yemen.

  • An additional 228 outpatient therapeutic care programmes (OTPs) have been opened so far in 2013 for the treatment of children with severe and moderate acute malnutrition, including 34 in Sa’ada, North Yemen.

  • Over 22,675 people are being served by 7 new water pumping sets installed in Abyan and Lahj, South Yemen.

Japan provides US$ 8.6 million to UNICEF in Support of its Humanitarian Programme (EN/AR)

Sana’a 13th March 2013 - UNICEF announced today that Japan will make the largest humanitarian contribution to the organization in its 67 year history. The government generous contribution of US$189.5 million will support a wide range of projects in 35 developing countries and territories in Africa and the Middle East including Yemen.

Highlights:

  • 35,794 vulnerable displaced and conflict affected children (boys: 15,597, girls: 20,197) were provided psychosocial support in Abyan, Aden, Al Dhale'e and Lahj (South Yemen), Amran, Hajjah and Sa'ada (North), Amanat Al Asimah, Sana'a and Taiz Governorates (Central/West).

  • The UNICEF WASH team is working with other cluster partners in preparedness for the upcoming World Water Day (March 22nd 2013).

UNICEF Yemen Situation Report - Reporting period: January 2013

Highlights:

  • 4.5 million children under 5 received oral polio vaccine and vitamin A supplementation in a nationwide campaign that took place at the end of January.

  • 28.8% of the population in conflict affected areas of Abyan Governorate is chronically malnourished and 16.1% acutely malnourished according to preliminary findings from the nutrition SMART survey. The southern governorate has recently emerged from a two-year armed conflict.

Highlights:

-877 of the most vulnerable and conflict affected children (413 girls, 464 boys) received birth certificates during a rapid registration campaign in Aden Governorate, South Yemen.

-The nutrition sub cluster in Southern Yemen finalized the data collection phase of the ongoing SMART survey in Abyan during December. Data entry and analysis will begin in January 2013.

-86,000 bags have been distributed as part of the back to school campaign for Hodeidah, Al-Mahweet and Raymah Governorates, North Yemen.

Highlights:

  • The President of Yemen issued a decree to end the use and recruitment of children by armed forces or groups in the wake of a recent visit by the Special Representative for Children Affected by Armed Conflict (SRSG CAAC). As a result, a structured disarmament, demobilization and reintegration programme will be drawn up based on signed action plans with the listed entities under security council resolution 1612.

ECHO provides € 7 million to help UNICEF combat child malnutrition in Yemen (EN/AR)

SANA’A/BRUSSELS, 19 November 2012 - The European Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) is increasing its funding to UNICEF to help combat child malnutrition in Yemen. UNICEF announced today that ECHO has donated a further €3.8 million for this nutrition project in Yemen, bringing the total ECHO contribution in 2012 to €7 million.

• Global Hand-Washing Day (GHWD) was celebrated on 15th October in 354 schools, with 990,000 schoolchildren involved. Additionally, 1.5 million text messages were sent to subscribers with key messages on hand-washing with soap.

Highlights:

-The SMART nutrition survey was conducted in Aden, covering a sample size of 1,221 households. Preliminary analysis of under 5s revealed; a normal chronic malnutrition level of 16.7%, serious underweight ratio of 24.4% and critical acute malnutrition of 18.9%.

-UNICEF and the EU supported the “No Kids Behind Bars” campaign launch in partnership with civil society organizations.

  • Yemen has become the first country in the Arab Peninsula to introduce the Rota virus vaccine.

  • There is high coverage of hygiene practices among women of reproductive age in the internally displaced person (IDP) camps as demonstrated in a recent survey in Haradh (North Yemen), Aden and Lahj (South Yemen); Over 95% of women had access to dignity kits and were using sanitary towels.

Highlights

SMART nutrition survey in Lahj governorate (south Yemen) documents a global acute malnutrition (GAM) rate of 23% and a severe acute malnutrition (SAM) rate of 4.5% in the lowland ecological zone. In Rayma governorate (central Yemen), a SMART survey measures stunting prevalence at 71.4%, with severe stunting at 41.3%. These findings exceed WHO ‘critical’ levels.
