12 April 2013 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed Yemeni President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi's efforts to restructure the country's security sector which the United Nations Security Council confirmed are in line with its resolutions.

“The Secretary-General welcomes President Hadi's ongoing efforts to restructure the Yemeni armed forces with a view to integrating them under unified, national and professional leadership and command based on the rule of law,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

7 March 2013 – If the humanitarian situation in Yemen is not urgently addressed, there will be no prospects for recovery and development, United Nations aid agencies and their partners stressed today, as a meeting focusing on the country’s ongoing transition got under way in London.

The 2013 Yemen Humanitarian Response Plan urgently requires $716 million to provide emergency and early recovery assistance to 7.7 million of the country’s most vulnerable. The figure represents a 22 per cent increase over last year’s plan, which was only 58 per cent funded.

Landmines threatening safe return of displaced Yemenis, UN warns

5 March 2013 – Landmines and other explosive remnants of war are threatening the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yemen, a spokesperson for the United Nations humanitarian arm warned today, adding that demining efforts are being hampered by a funding shortfall.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that 140,000 formerly displaced people have returned to Abyan Governorate in southern Yemen, Jens Laerke told reporters in Geneva.

21 January 2013 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged Arab nations to deepen and broaden the reforms under way in order to improve lives, enhance opportunities and advance equality in the region.

“In the last few years, Arab citizens have raised their voices to demand political change, democracy, economic and social development and an end to corruption. Today’s gathering is an opportunity to respond to their legitimate calls for progress, freedom and dignity,” Mr. Ban told the Third Summit Meeting on Arab Economic and Social Development, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

28 November 2012 – The United Nations envoy for Yemen said today that an agreement has been reached to resolve the last contentious issue of the allocation of seats for the all-inclusive national dialogue conference that is a key element of the country’s democratic transition.

The agreement paves the way for the holding of the national dialogue, which is scheduled to take place later this year and the outcome of which will feed into a constitution-making process that is to conclude in late 2013, enabling general elections to take place in February 2014.

23 November 2012 – Marking the first anniversary of the signing of Yemen’s peace agreement, a senior United Nations official today called on the country’s leaders to address pending issues that will enable the launch of the national dialogue – a key element of the democratic transition.

Security Council and UN chief condemn deadly terrorist attack in Yemen

The United Nations Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today strongly condemned a terrorist attack in the city of Sana’a, the Yemeni capital, which reportedly killed at least 96 soldiers and wounded more than 300 people.

“This criminal act cannot be justified by any cause,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement. “Its perpetrators must be held accountable.”

4 May 2012 – A United Nations mediator facilitated the peaceful transfer of command of a key military brigade from a relative of the country’s former President to an official appointed by his elected successor, Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi Mansour, as part of the country’s ongoing transition process.

“I witnessed the handing over of the command of the Third Brigade from Colonel Tarek Mohammed Abdullah Saleh to Colonel Abdulrahman al-Halili,” the UN Special Adviser on Yemen Jamal Benomar told reporters last night in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital.
