In 1997, 123 States signed the first-ever treaty banning the development, production, stockpiling, transfer and use of a weapon that was already in widespread use: anti-personnel landmines. Fifteen years later, their use and production has been curbed dramatically, while data on clearance, stockpile destruction and casualty rates show undeniable progress towards eliminating the problem. However, much still needs to be achieved, as Claude Tardif, Hhead of the ICRC’s physical rehabilitation programme, explains.

I. Introduction

At the 8-9 December high-level United Nations conference convened in support of the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), donors pledged generous contributions totaling $424 million for 2010. The figure marks an increase of more than 10 percent from last December's conference, when some $380 million was raised.

Five new donors stepped forward - Madagascar, Mauritania, the Russian Federation, Singapore, and the Sovereign Order of Malta. Several long-standing donors also announced significant increases

General Assembly President Closes Annual Debate Pledging to Work With Member States towards Renewed Commitment to Promoting Inclusive Multilateralism

No longer satisfied with a power balance that favoured the few but risked imperilling the many in another economic tailspin, world leaders addressing the General Assembly today appealed for a new brand of multilateralism that reflected developing nations' concerns in global decision-making, as they wrapped up the annual general debate.

In response to the severity of the food crisis and the need for prompt action, the World Bank Group set up the Global Food Crisis Response Program (GFRP) in May 2008 to provide immediate relief to countries hard hit by food high prices. The Bank response has been articulated in coordination with the United Nations' High-Level Task Force on food security. Through its response, the Bank is supporting the implementation of the joint Comprehensive Framework for Action (CFA).
