Food aid cuts threaten Yemen ceasefire - WFP

Report
AlertNet
Written by: Olesya Dmitracovav

LONDON (AlertNet) - The U.N. food aid agency says a lack of funds is forcing it to cut rations for people driven from their homes by fighting in northern Yemen, endangering a fragile ceasefire between rebels and the government.

From May, the World Food Programme (WFP) will reduce food assistance for 270,000 displaced people by half until donors provide more money or the funds run out altogether, the organisation's Yemen director Gian Carlo Cirri said on Friday.

Peacebuilding in Somalia - continued role of the grassroots communities

Beneath the apparent homogeneity at the national level, the Somali society remains divided, not only by social and occupational stratifications, differences between urban and rural sectors, but also by clan forms of social organization to which Somalis belong. Without getting into details of the conflict, the current situation is that the country is still going through a deep crisis with a socio-political and economic fabric completely destroyed by almost two decades of armed

YEMEN: IDP food rations to be halved from May

Report
IRIN
SANAA, 29 April 2010 (IRIN) - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) will cut food rations to some 250,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yemen by 50 percent from the beginning of May.

This is a reduction from 2,100 kilocalories (kcal) per person per day - the minimum food required for a healthy life - to 1,050 kcal a day.

"Reducing rations to IDPs is not a solution," said Gian Carlo Cirri, WFP country director. "It is a last resort, but we have no other option."

Yemen: Part of the Problem, Part of the Solution

Jamila El Abdellaoui, Senior Researcher, African Conflict Prevention Programme, ISS Addis Ababa Office

Yemen recently received a spot in the limelight thanks to the 'underwear bomber,' a Nigerian national who attempted to blow up a plane bound for the US on Christmas Day and who allegedly received training from Al-Qaeda elements in Yemen. Despite the fact that Yemen has been facing a myriad of challenges for some time now, the country rarely received media attention prior to the failed terrorist attack on the US airliner. People soon caught up though, and the recent confrontations

Pakistan, Afghanistan make South Asia terror capital

WASHINGTON: Increases in terror attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan triggered a spike in the number of civilians killed or wounded there last year and pushed South Asia past the Middle East as the top terror region in the world, according to new figures compiled by a US intelligence agency.

Thousands of civilians - overwhelmingly Muslim - continue to be slaughtered in extremist attacks, contributing to the instability of the often shaky, poverty-stricken governments in the region, the statistics compiled by the National Counterterrorism Center show.

Report
UN News Service
28 April 2010 - The United Nations food agency will be forced to cut rations for tens of thousands of people affected by the conflict in north-western Yemen starting this Saturday because stocks have dwindled as a result of limited funding.

The UN World Food Programmed (WFP) reported today that it is facing a shortfall of nearly 70 per cent on its 2010 budget requirements for relief work in the conflict-affected Yemeni governorate of Sa'ada, meaning that $24 million is still needed to sustain the operation.

The international human rights organization says that the list of states that have risen most prominently in the table this year are those which have all been the scene of past mass violence, and whose fall down the risk register in recent years has now suddenly been reversed - putting the lives of tens of thousands under threat.

YEMEN: Protests threaten stability

Report
IRIN
SANAA, 27 April 2010 (IRIN) - A wave of protests in cities throughout Yemen earlier this month is prompting concerns that if the government does not react appropriately, the country's stability and unity could be at risk.

Returns to northern Yemen cautious and slow

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Melissa Fleming - to whom quoted text may be attributed - at the press briefing, on 23 April 2010, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

More than two months after the cease-fire and a month after the officially declared end of the conflict in northern Yemen, an estimated 7,000 displaced Yemeni civilians from the camps at Al Mazraq have visited their home areas to assess destruction and damage to their farms and other property.

We estimate that only a quarter of those
