Desert locust situation update 01 Aug 2008: Situation remains calm as summer breeding starts

The current Desert Locust situation is calm in all countries in Africa and southwest Asia. Low numbers of solitarious adults are present in the summer breeding areas in the northern Sahel between Mauritania and the Nile Valley in Sudan. Due to insecurity, ground surveys can only be carried out in Mauritania and parts of Sudan. Breeding is also underway along both sides of the Indo-Pakistan border in areas where seasonal monsoon rains fell last month.

Somewhat higher numbers of locusts are present in the Central Sahara of Algeria where adults are concentrating

Yemen: Thousands of IDPs unable to return home

SANAA, 28 July 2008 (IRIN) - Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Saada Governorate, northern Yemen, have not been able to return home after their houses were destroyed in recent fighting between government forces and Shia rebels, local sources have said.

The long-running conflict, which started in 2004, has left hundreds dead and thousands displaced.

"There are still thousands displaced because their houses were destroyed," Salem Mohammed, an IDP in Saada city, told IRIN. He said some IDPs were worried fighting could flare up

SANAA, 24 July 2008 (IRIN) - Since 2004 hundreds of people have been killed and thousands displaced as a result of fighting between Shia rebels and government forces in the northern governorate of Saada. IRIN takes a look at the background to the conflict, and tries to shed light on why it still smoulders today.

The Shia al-Houthi rebels take their name from their leader, Hussein Badraddin al-Houthi, who was killed in September 2004, and succeeded by his brother, the current leader, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

Yemen's Saleh says fighting with rebels has ended

SANAA, July 17 (Reuters) - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh said on Thursday battles with Shi'ite rebels in the north, which have raged on and off since 2004, had ended and that dialogue should replace fighting.

"We announce that the war is over. It actually ended three days ago," Saleh said in a brief speech carried by state television. "Dialogue is the civilised way and is better than bloodshed," Saleh said, without elaborating.

Regional official killed in rebel ambush in northern Yemen

Sana'a, Yemen_(dpa) _ Gunmen loyal to a Shiite rebel group killed a senior regional official in an ambush in the north-western Yemeni al-Jawf province on Wednesday, local sources said.

The sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that Abdul-Wahab al-Dhamin, the deputy governor of al-Jawf, and three tribal chieftains accompanying him were killed after the gunmen opened fire on al-Dhamin's car.

The attackers ambushed the car near al-Zahir district of al-Jawf, some 195 kilometres north west of the capital Sana'a, they said.

Yemen: USAID donates US$1.7 million in food aid

SANAA, 15 July 2008 (IRIN) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has donated US$1.7 million in urgent food aid for conflict-affected civilians in northern Yemen as well as Somali refugees in the south.

Most of the aid - US$1.2 million - is for the alleviation of the humanitarian situation in the northern governorate of Saada where fierce clashes between government forces and Shia rebels have left thousands displaced and many dead or injured.

Yemen: Emergency EU aid for conflict-hit region

SANAA, 10 July 2008 (IRIN) - The European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) has approved one million euros [about US$1.57 million] in emergency humanitarian aid to support those affected by conflict in Saada Governorate, northern Yemen.

The funds would be used to help displaced families and people wounded in the fighting. The relief assistance would include food and non-food items, shelter, sanitation and health services.

Yemen: Commission allocates €1 million for victims of the conflict in Sa'ada Governorate

The European Commission has approved €1 million in emergency humanitarian aid to support victims of the conflict in Northern Yemen. The funds will be used mainly to help people who have been internally displaced (IDPs) or who have been wounded in the fighting. The funds are being channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid department under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel. The number of war-affected people is estimated to be at least 77,000. About 12,000 of those who have been displaced are accomodated in six camps in Sa'ada

Yemen: Influx of African arrivals in June

SANAA, 6 July 2008 (IRIN) - The Somali consul in the port city of Aden, southern Yemen, said hundreds of African migrants crossed the Gulf of Aden to Yemen in June in search of a better life in Saudi Arabia despite a high risk of death at sea or at the hands of ruthless smugglers.

"They made the perilous sea journey despite rough seas. The number of arrivals registered by the UN Refugee Agency [UNHCR] was over 700, while those who were not registered stood at about 350," Hussein Hajji, the Somali consul, told IRIN.
