Yemen - Horn of Africa: Dozens of African migrants drown off Yemeni coast

SANAA, 24 December 2007 (IRIN) - Dozens of African migrants, mostly from Somalia and Ethiopia, have died over the past few days while trying to reach Yemen's southern shores by boat, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

The agency said over 100 Africans had drowned , and another 95 had gone missing and were feared dead in two separate incidents.

Mira Sabonji, a protection officer at the UNHCR office in Aden, told IRIN that a boat carrying 270 African migrants collided with a rock on 16 December off the Yemeni coast, killing dozens

At least 256,000 people have been displaced from Mogadishu since the end of October due to ongoing conflict between Ethiopian/Transitional Federal Government (TFG) forces and anti-government elements. Fighting continued throughout the week with heavy shelling in Yaaqshiid, Hawl Wadaag, Heliwa and Wardhiigleey displacing about 10,000 people in the reporting period. Somalia-Yemen: Deadly migration to Yemen continues, despite risks

NAIROBI, 21 December 2007 (IRIN) - Somali and Ethiopian migrants continue to set out to Yemen from Somalia's self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, despite the deadly risks and warnings from aid agencies, local sources told IRIN on 21 December.

"As we speak, there is a boat getting ready to depart for Yemen with about 200 migrants," said Abdirazaq Omar Osman, a journalist in Bosasso, the Puntland commercial capital.

He said the boat would most likely leave on 21 December "if it has not already left."

Somalia: More than 200 boat people feared drowned in separate incidents

GENEVA, December 14 (UNHCR) - The deadly drama of migrants and refugees dying at sea as they attempt to cross waterways around the world was underscored last week by a number of tragedies which left more than 200 people dead or missing off Turkey, the Canary Islands and Yemen.

Last Saturday, 51 people drowned when a boat carrying irregular migrants from Turkey to Greece sank in rough weather off the Turkish coast close to Seferihisar, a town 50 kilometres south-west of Izmir. Another 35 people are still missing and are presumed to have also drowned.

Somalia-Yemen: Fadumo Abdullahi: "Staying in Mogadishu was worse than dying"

BOSASSO, 13 December 2007 (IRIN) - In mid-November, Fadumo Abdullahi, 30, fled fighting in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, and is now living in a cramped, makeshift camp for the displaced on the outskirts of Bosasso, the commercial capital of the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, northeastern Somalia.

From Bosasso, Abdullahi hopes to make her way to Yemen, from where she will proceed to Saudi Arabia where she hopes to survive as an immigrant. Abdullahi left her four children with her mother in a camp for the displaced near the town of Afgoye, 30km south of Mogadishu.

Somalia: Genet Mengesha - "Yemen is still my destination"

BOSASSO, 10 December 2007 (IRIN) - Genet Mengesha, a 24-year-old mother of one and former university student, left her home in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, shortly after the 2005 elections to reach Yemen through the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, northeastern Somalia.

"I left with my husband and a group of other migrants. We were led by a broker we met in Addis, who took us to Nazareth and then on to Harar.

"I left Addis after my brother was killed in the violence that followed the elections [in 2005]. I did not feel safe and was tired of the violence.

Yemen: WFP to extend food aid programme in Saada region

SANAA, 10 December 2007 (IRIN) - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Yemen has said it will extend its food aid for displaced and insurgency-affected people in Saada Province in northern Yemen until March 2008. The improved security situation will allow food aid to reach many more people in region.

WFP Yemen Country Director Mohamed El-Kouhene told IRIN on 9 December aid would reach about 77,000 people a month, more than double the number than in previous months.

In June 2007 WFP began providing food assistance to 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Saada town.

Somalia: New efforts underway to stop tragedies of irregular migration in Gulf of Aden

In collaboration with partners, IOM has begun a series of activities in Somalia's Puntland to help reduce the annual loss of lives in the Gulf of Aden as thousands of Ethiopian and Somali migrants and asylum seekers attempt to cross from Somalia's Puntland to Yemen using smuggling networks, and to provide better protection for them along their journey.

More food needed to feed thousands of displaced in Yemen

SANA'A - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today that improved security will allow food assistance to reach many more people in Yemen's Sa'adah governorate, where conflict has displaced thousands.

The agency appealed for funds to make up a shortfall of US$3.3 million to feed 77,000 people until next March - more than double the number than in previous months.

Somalia-Yemen: Over 80 African migrants die as boat capsizes off coast

SANAA, 4 December 2007 (IRIN) - Scores of African migrants, mostly from Somalia, died on 29 November when their boat capsized off the Yemeni coast, the Somali consulate in Yemen's southern province of Aden has said.

Somalia's consul-general in Aden, Hussein Haji Ahmed, told IRIN the death toll was over 80, including women and children.

The boat was carrying over 120 African migrants and was heading for the southern Yemeni province of Hadhramaut.

Somalia: Risking all for a new life in Yemen

BOSASSO, 4 December 2007 (IRIN) - Genet Mengesha left her home in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, to undertake the uncertain, often treacherous, journey to Yemen shortly after the 2005 elections.

"I was tired of the violence; my brother was one of those students who were killed," the 24-year-old Genet told IRIN on 2 December in Bosasso, capital of Somalia's self-declared autonomous region of Puntland.
