NAIROBI, 14 Jun 2006 (IRIN) - While Yemen enjoys a historical connection with Somalia, due largely to generosity and help offered in times of war, there seems to be growing discontentment among the 50,000-strong local Somali refugee population.

Yemen's offer of automatic refugee status to Somalis on arrival has prompted huge migrations from the Horn of Africa, often under dangerous conditions. Once in Yemen, however, refugees say they face difficulties finding access to work, education and basic healthcare

Ethiopia-Somalia-Yemen: Testimonies from Somalia

Report
IRIN
NAIROBI, 14 Jun 2006 (IRIN) - With life in Somalia offering so little comfort and hope, some migrants risk crossing the Gulf of Aden to Yemen, not just once, but time and time again. More than 5,000 Somalis registered as refugees in Yemen in the first four months of 2006, and the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) believes many more travelled on, making their way to Saudi Arabia.
Jilibley Mohamed, 30, from southern Somalia

I have been deported nine times from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. We get put on planes or boats and taken to Mogadishu.

Somalia: The grass is always greener - migrant life in Yemen

Report

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

NAIROBI, 14 Jun 2006 (IRIN) - Musa clutches his son tightly as he sits on the dusty, chaotic roadside next to a petrol station in Sana'a, Yemen's capital. This is his home: a blanket, a pillow and a small plastic bag containing his belongings. A Somali, he arrived in Sana'a a year and a half ago. This is his second visit to Yemen - on his first, he kept going to Saudi Arabia, but because he had entered illegally, he was deported to Somalia.

In 2004, Musa braved the boat journey
