Summary

 As of 29 June 2016, 61 countries and territories report continuing mosquito-borne transmission (Fig. 1) of which:

 47 countries are experiencing a first outbreak of Zika virus since 2015, with no previous evidence of circulation, and with ongoing transmission by mosquitos (Table 1).

 14 countries reported evidence of Zika virus transmission between 2007 and 2014, with ongoing transmission.

To date, 40 countries and territories have confirmed local, vector-borne transmission of Zika virus disease in the Region of the Americas since 2015 (Figure 1). Since the last Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Zika Epidemiological Update on 16 June 2016, Anguilla has confirmed vector-borne autochthonous transmission of Zika virus.

17 June 2016 – The World Health Organization (WHO)/the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and partners have set out their strategic response to Zika which will place a greater focus on preventing and managing medical complications caused by Zika virus infection. To date, US$121.9 million are necessary to effectively implement the Zika Strategic Response Plan, July 2016 to December 2017.

 The third meeting of the Emergency Committee (EC) convened by the Director-General under the International Health Regulations (2005) regarding microcephaly, other neurological disorders and Zika virus was held by teleconference on 14 June 20161. The committee concurred with the international scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and GBS, and, consequently, that Zika virus infection and its associated congenital and other neurological disorders is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Summary: Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne virus predominately transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquitoes (A.aegypti and A.albopictus) - the same type of mosquitoes that spreads dengue, chikungunya and yellow fever. The Zika virus is spreading rapidly and increasing scientific evidence is demonstrating the impact of the virus, especially on pregnant women and their infants is far greater than first reported.
