World Food Day 2014: Supporting Family Farming

World Food Day is recognized every October 16th to bring awareness to global hunger. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that worldwide more than 800 million people are suffering from chronic hunger and under-nourishment. This year’s theme “Family Farming: Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth” brings attention to the important role that small farmers play in the larger context of national food security. CrisisWatch N°134 - 1 October 2014

The U.S. expanded its aerial campaign against Islamic State (IS) militants in late September with strikes in Syria’s north and east. The operation, which targets both IS and fighters linked to al-Qaeda’s central leadership and the affiliated group Jabhat al-Nusra, risks alienating other rebel groups in Syria and strengthening support for IS.

Price Watch September 2014 Prices

Key Messages

  • In West Africa, staple food markets were well-supplied in August, with carryover stocks and early grain, tuber, and legume harvests. Staple food prices were stable or declining, except in deficit areas of Niger, Chad, and Mauritania and conflict-affected areas of northeastern Nigeria. The Ebola outbreak has led to both official and voluntary restrictions on the movement of goods and people in affected countries, resulting in atypical market trends in some areas.

Africa's uneven health care becomes easy prey for Ebola

10/01/2014 02:03 GMT

by Selim SAHEB ETTABA

DAKAR, October 1, 2014 (AFP) - The disparity in African countries' ability to fight Ebola has left the continent fighting an uneven struggle against a disease that doesn't respect borders -- yet relatively simple measures could help, experts say.

While countries like Ivory Coast, Kenya and South Africa have well-equipped hospitals with specialist units and high-tech labs, vast expanses of the continent remain health-care deserts.
