Among the most significant impacts of climate change is the potential increase of food insecurity and malnutrition. But, how exactly? This infographic shows how more frequent and intense droughts and floods affect the most vulnerable households at risk of hunger, and what WFP is doing to help people adapt and build resilience to climate change.
Soils help to combat and adapt to climate change by playing a key role in the carbon cycle
Healthy soils provide the largest store of terrestrial carbon. When managed sustainably, soils can play an important role in climate change mitigation by storing carbon (carbon sequestration) and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.
Köppen-Geiger Climate Classification
The highly referenced climate classification map of Wladimir Köppen was published for the first time in 1900 and updated in its latest version by Rudolf Geiger in 1961.
Climate classification is applied to a broad range of topics in climate and climate change research as well as in physical geography, hydrology, agriculture, biology and educational aspects.
U.S.A. - Severe weather
• Severe weather, including thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain, hail and tornadoes affected several areas of Midwest and Mid-Atlantic United States on 21-23 June. Several tornadoes were reported in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Michigan on 22 June.
• According to media (as of 23 June), seven people were injured and several damages occurred, mostly in the area of Coal City in northern Illinois.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) respond to environmental emergencies through the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit (JEU). JEU combines UNEP's environmental expertise with the OCHA-coordinated humanitarian network. This helps to ensure an integrated approach by coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners.
La seguridad alimentaria y la agricultura se enfrentan a grandes desafíos con el cambio climático, en términos de impactos negativos en la productividad e implementación de acciones sectoriales para limitar el calentamiento global.
The IPCC has produced the most comprehensive assessment of climate change ever. The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), is the work of 830 expert authors from 85 countries and its first three volumes already stretch to 5,000+ pages.
This poster shows projections of climate change impacts and population change by the end of the 21st century in the context of the way we live today, without adaptation.
The central map shows information about present-day human dynamics, and the surrounding maps show some of the projections of climate change impacts and population change. The climate projections are taken from the latest generation of climate and impacts models, for the end of the century (2071—2100) relative to a 1981—2010 baseline, under a ‘business as usual’ greenhouse gas concentration scenario (RCP8.5).
A study on the implications of climate change and urbanization for environmental emergency preparedness and response
Climate change: Climate-related disasters affected an estimated 2.6 billion people between 1999 and 2009, with the cost of responding to such disasters increasing tenfold between 1992 and 2008.
Urbanization: More than half of the world’s population lives in cities and, by 2030, the urban population is expected to exceed 5 billion.
The Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit (JEU) responds to environmental emergencies by coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners. By pairing the environmental expertise of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the humanitarian network coordinated by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the JEU ensures an integrated approach in responding to environmental emergencies.
The Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit (JEU) is a collaborative arrangement between the United Nations Environment Programme and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. It responds to environmental emergencies by coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners to support affected countries requesting assistance.
