FEMA Hurricane Georges Disaster Update

Washington September 29, 1998, 4:00 p.m. EDT -- Selected highlights of federal response activities following Hurricane Georges:

National Hurricane Center:

Georges has been downgraded to a tropical depression, but continues to plague the Gulf Coast with heavy rain and gusty winds. Some areas have received more than 25 inches of rain since yesterday. An additional eight to 15 inches are possible.

Gulf Local/State Operations:

In Florida, state officials are reporting 150 houses, including 75 houseboats, are destroyed; another 500 houses

FEMA Begins Recovery Efforts in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands After Hurricane Georges

WASHINGTON September 22, 1998 - The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), island officials and other federal agencies are beginning a recovery effort in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands following damage left overnight by Hurricane Georges. Emergency declarations signed yesterday provide federal funding for recovery efforts even before disaster assessments are made.

FEMA Assists with Clean up After Hurricane Georges; Attention Turns to Possible Florida Landfall

WASHINGTON September 22, 1998, 6:00 p.m. EDT - Based on National Hurricane Center predictions, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Florida officials are bracing for the possibility Hurricane Georges may strike that state by the end of the week. The National Weather Centre in Miami reports that at 0900 GMT, the center of hurricane Georges was located near latitude 17.4 North, Longitude 63.1 west or about 45 miles (70 km) south of St Martin. Hurricane Georges is moving west-northwest at near 17 miles/hour (28 km/hour). On this track, the core of the hurricane will move near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico later today. Maximum

The islands of the north-east Caribbean Sea from Dominica northward and westward to Puerto Rico are bearing the full brunt of Hurricane Georges which started to pound the region yesterday with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph/185 km/hr and higher gusts. A hurricane watch is in effect for the Dominican Republic. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch remain in effect from Martinique southward to St. Lucia.

President Clinton Orders Emergency Aid for Caribbean Hurricane Victims

Washington, Sept 21, 1998 -- President Clinton today moved to aid people in the hurricane-battered U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by ordering the immediate release of federal emergency resources to help meet basic human needs and protect life and property, according to the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

FEMA Director James Lee Witt said the President issued the emergency declarations immediately after receiving from FEMA this afternoon expedited requests for federal relief from the governors of the besieged islands which were whipped by Hurricane Georges'

The Caribbean - FEMA Intensifies Preparations for Hurricane Georges

Washington, Sept 20 -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today intensified federal mobilization efforts as Hurricane Georges drew closer to a potential strike on Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Preparations Continue as Hurricane Georges and Tropical Storm Hermine Approach U.S. Territories and Mainland

Washington, Sept 20 -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is continuing to monitor and prepare for the approach of Hurricane Georges as it threatens the U.S. territories of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. FEMA officials are also closely monitoring Tropical Storm Hermine, which is threatening several Gulf Coast states.
