Hurricane Bertha Update #1

The situation in brief as of 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 8:

Preliminary reports from federal disaster response personnel in the U.S. Virgin Islands indicate numerous homes have been damaged, many of them still undergoing repairs from Hurricane Marilyn. All three airports are closed, and navigational instruments at the airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico are operating only for emergency landings on one runway. Air traffic control has been turned over to FAA controllers in Miami.

FEMA Mobilizing to Confront Hurricane Bertha

WASHINGTON July 8, 1996 - In anticipation that Hurricane Bertha would pass over the U.S. Virgin Islands around noon today (EDT), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) personnel and equipment and resources from other federal agencies have been moving into position near the expected path of the storm.

At 8:00 a.m. this morning, FEMA activated an Emergency Support Team at its Washington, D.C. headquarters to coordinate the federal government's disaster response and placed its Urban Search and Rescue task force in Dade Co., Fla., on full alert.

1. THE US NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE REPORTS THAT AS OF 0300 UTC HURRICANE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR MOST OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS FROM DOMINICA NORTHWARD TO ANGUILLA AND ST. MAARTEN. A HURRICANE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE BRITISH AND U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND GUADELOUPE NORTHWARD. THESE WATCHES MAY BE UPGRADED LATER TODAY.

2. THE US NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE INDICATES THAT AS OF 0900 UTC THE CENTER OF TROPICAL BERTHA WAS LOCATED
