When the United Nations considers the problem of desertification, Central Asia is a logical place to focus.

The region is home to large deserts, has one of the Earth's driest climates, and has been subject to increased human pressures in recent decades that have exacerbated its already harsh conditions.

Temperatures

During the past week, temperatures averaged near to slightly below normal across most of Central Asia. Temperatures are forecast to average 2 to 6 degrees C above normal during the second week of May. Minimum temperatures are forecast to remain above freezing except for the highest elevations of Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Maximum temperatures are forecast to occasionally warm above 30 degrees C across southwest Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan during the next week.

Another asylum seeker from Uzbekistan is in custody while he contests an extradition order issued by the Kyrgyz authorities in violation of international law.

Security Council stresses need for further cooperation in Central Asia

29 January 2013 – The Security Council today stressed the need for cooperation and coordination between governments in Central Asia and regional organizations to strengthen peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.

In particular, the 15-member body underlined the need for governments to collaborate with the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), in a statement issued to the press.
