On May 31, 2013, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that its Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Relief Assistance (OFDA) is providing $200,000 to support the Humanitarian Response Forum (HRF) in Cambodia. The HRF will strengthen emergency preparedness in the country by enhancing coordination and communication among humanitarian organizations based in Cambodia.

Recently, while visiting the West Bank, I had the pleasure to meet Palestinian shop owner Abu Shadi at his store in the community of Dura in the Hebron governorate. His Al Awawdeh Shop is one of 130 West Bank shops participating in an innovative USAID/World Food Programme (WFP) food assistance voucher program that channels aid through the local market.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

  • More than 87 percent of IDPs in southern Yemen have returned to areas of origin since July 2012 as a result of improved security conditions, according to the U.N. However, less than 11 percent of IDPs in northern Yemen have returned home due to protracted insecurity. A lack of basic services is an issue in both northern and southern areas.

U.S. food assistance has been critical in helping more than three billion people in over 150 countries. Food assistance saves lives, helps people recover from crises, and addresses chronic poverty and malnutrition. Unfortunately humanitarian needs and the scope of food crises continue to expand while many countries, including ours, face increasing budget constraints.
