WASHINGTON, April 16, 2012 – Eighteen African countries lose around US$5.5 billion every year due to poor sanitation, with annual economic losses between 1 percent and 2.5 percent of GDP, says a new report by the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program (WSP).

“The 18 African countries represented in this study account for 554 million people—that’s more than half of Africa’s population,” said WSP Manager Jaehyang So. “This is powerful evidence for Ministers that their countries will not be able to grow sustainably without addressing these costs.”

Between January and 11 march 2012, a total of 6 634 meningitis cases and 646 deaths have been reported from 14 countries resulting in a CFR of 9.7% (Figure 1). Twenty districts from 9 countries experienced menin-gitis outbreaks during the period under review as indicated in the map.

UNICEF and partners focus on underserved to eliminate MNT

NEW YORK, 22 February 2011 - Despite an estimated 90 per cent decline in global maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) deaths over the last two decades, a newborn child still dies every nine minutes from the disease, according to the latest available figures. While MNT deaths have dropped globally from an estimated 800,000 in the late 1980s to 59,000 in 2008, the deaths that still occur are disproportionately concentrated among poor, uneducated and neglected populations.

Belgium: A record contribution to the World Food Programme

In 2010, Belgium made a record contribution to the UN World Food Programme. The Belgian contribution had never been so high, at a total of €28.6 million for 2010.

The highest contribution ever

The World Food Programme operates in 80 countries, providing food and humanitarian aid during disasters or long-running conflicts. Two years ago, Belgium contributed €18 million to the World Food Programme, and in 2009 that contribution rose sharply to €27.5 million. But last year it was higher still. Our total came to €28.6 million, the highest ever.

Epidemiological summary of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus - Ontario, Canada, June 2009

In March and April 2009, a novel strain of influenza A (H1N1) virus was detected in Mexico and the United States. The virus has since spread worldwide, and there have been >340 000 laboratory-confirmed cases and >4100 deaths reported to WHO as of 27 September 2009.
