Twenty African countries to benefit from maize, cassava, wheat and maize intervention

Nigeria and 19 other African countries will directly benefit from the African Development Bank- funded initiative known as the Support for Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops (SARD-SC), but the multiplier effect of the project is expected to affect other regional member countries in the continent.

Direct beneficiaries of the intervention include farmers in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

WHO calls for urgent de-worming interventions to stop Neglected Tropical Diseases and malnutrition in the Sahel and Central Africa

Brazzaville, Congo: 27 October 2012 – As the Sahel food crisis persists, compounded by recent flooding in the region, the World Health Organization (WHO) has appealed to health and development partners to support affected countries prioritize de-worming activities as part of urgent relief efforts.

"Flooding now being experienced in parts of the Sahel, creates the ideal breeding ground for contracting Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as bilharzia, and worm-like diseases putting more at risk of malnutrition,” says WHO African Regional Director Dr Luis Gomes Sambo.

MALI - Des informations divergentes circulent depuis mercredi sur la libération de Filomena Kaboure, ressortissante italienne d'origine burkinabè enlevée par le mouvement Al-Qaïda au Magreb (Aqmi). Selon certaines sources, l'otage aurait été libérée en même temps que l'Espagnole Alicia Gomez ; selon d'autres, qui rapportent en revanche la libération effective d'Alicia Gomez, Filomena Kaboure se trouverait toujours aux mains de ses ravisseurs. Mme Kaboure a été enlevée le 18 décembre dernier en Mauritanie en même temps que son époux, l'Italien Sergio Cicala.

DAKAR, 1 December (IRIN) - Friday is annual World AIDS Day but despite a boom in publicity campaigns such as this one, the disease continues to spread in Africa because basic details about the illness are not reaching the right people, UNAIDS has warned.

According to a report released last week by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), 4.3 million new cases of HIV were registered in 2006 and 65 percent of them were in Africa. Some three million people met an early death because of HIV/AIDS
