Donors launch new fund for Africa's small farmers

ACCRA, March 18, 2009 (AFP) - Standard Bank of South Africa and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), chaired by former UN head Kofi Annan, Wednesday joined forces to set up a fund to support small farmers and agricultural businesses in four countries.

At a press conference in the Ghanaian capital, the bank said it will put 100 million dollars (78 million euros) into the fund over three years and AGRA will provide a 10-million-dollar loan guarantee fund.

The fund will operate in Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique and Uganda. The interest rates to be paid by the beneficiary

Africa: Political will needed to check hunger

ROME, 21 February 2008 (IRIN) - The lack of political will to invest in agriculture has affected the chances of halving poverty and hunger in Africa by 2015, according to a senior United Nations official.

"Investment in agriculture, more than other sectors, provides four times the returns," said Kanayo Nwanze, vice-president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, a UN agency working to end rural poverty.

Thousands left homeless and isolated due to heavy rains and floods across Africa

CARE International staff throughout Africa are on high alert as torrential rains and flooding affect large parts of the continent.

United Nation's agencies estimate that more than a million people have been affected by flooding as torrential rain batters over 20 countries stretching from East to West Africa. Countries such as Ghana and Uganda are experiencing unusually high rainfall. It is feared that many more people will be at risk across the continent if the rains continue past the end of the rainy season and hit areas that have so far escaped the floods.

Some of the worst flooding in nearly 30 years has devastated swathes of east and southern Africa affecting over 1.5 million people.

In Ghana nearly 800,000 people have been affected by torrential rains which have devastated farms and destroyed crops.

At least 17 people have died as a result and the government has declared Ghana's three northern regions a disaster area.

ActionAid is responding to the disaster, distributing food and clothes in the Upper East Region, the area most affected by the floods.

At least 300 people have died in the flooding since heavy rains began sweeping across the continent two months ago. With nearly half of Africa's countries hit, the cost of the damage, is only beginning to emerge.

More than 1.5 million people in 18 countries have been affected, with thousands displaced and massive damage to crops and livestock leading to fears of food shortages.

ActionAid partners are on the ground in Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria.

Episcopal Relief and Development responds following severe flooding in Ghana and Uganda

Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency assistance to communities affected by severe flooding in Ghana and Uganda. Nearly 17 African countries have been affected by heavy rains which began in early June. Approximately 1.5 million people have been impacted, including more than 680,000 in West Africa alone.

Koenders gives €11 million to Africa

Development minister Bert Koenders is giving €11 million in emergency aid to Uganda, Sudan and West Africa.

Four million euros will go to the victims of the floods in Uganda and West Africa, and seven million to Sudan.

JICA rushes aid to West and East Africa

With renewed flooding predicted, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is sending emergency assistance to both West and East Africa.

The agency earlier announced it was dispatching blankets, plastic sheeting, tents, water tanks, water softeners and purifiers and electric dynamos from its Frankfurt warehouse to the West African state of Ghana.
