Kasese flood victims need 11 million litres of water

The Uganda Red Cross Society has said Kasese flood victims need up to 11 million litres of safe water if disease is to be avoided, amid fears of a cholera outbreak.

Heavy rains that resulted into floods at the beginning of this month destroyed all toilet facilities and this has since affected water sources.

Dr. Bildard Baguma, the under secretary general, Uganda Red Cross Society said any donation was welcome and called upon people and organisations of good will to continue donating.

Kasese floods destroy property worth sh8b

Property worth $3m (about Shs8b) has so far been destroyed in Kasese district following the onset floods in the area on May 1st.

The minister of defense, Dr Crispus Kiyonga, said although the damage is so big, it is still smaller than what occurred in Bududa about two years ago. Kiyonga made the remarks briefing the press on Tuesday at Kasese Social Services Hall about the management of the disaster.

"The country lost more human lives in Bududa than it has been in Kasese and the landslides were more catastrophic," Kiyonga said.

Floods cut off 19 sub-counties

Bridges across the rivers in various parts of Kasese have collapsed cutting off 19 sub-counties and the district headquarters at Rukoki.

This follows the heavy river floods that have hit the district since May 1st this year in which eight people have died, property worth billions of shillings destroyed and causing displacement of hundreds of families in the district.

Government has deployed regional risk disaster officers in all disaster prone areas in the country to handle victims of floods that have ravaged the country, the state minister of refugees and disaster preparedness, Musa Ecweru has said.

"We are getting bad floods, landslides, storms and frequent lightning bolts therefore, need to have disasters officers in these areas in case disaster strikes," Ecweru told World Bank representatives, disaster specialists, MPs resident district commissioners and disaster management officers.

The Japanese government is providing US$21.2m (about Sh55.3b) to four UN agencies to support refugee programmes in south-western Uganda plus climate related, health, nutrition, water and sanitation challenges in Karamoja.

The announcement was made by the Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, Kazuo Minagawa at a press conference at the Uganda media Centre in Kampala.

"The four UN agencies are providing essential goods and services for the refugees and vulnerable people in Uganda.

Four killed in Kasese floods, scores stranded

At least four people are missing and feared dead in Kasese district after River Nyamwamba burst its banks, submerging several homes.

The floods have cut off the Kasese-Fort Portal Road, leaving many vehicles underwater and hundreds of people stranded.

Two of the victims drowned at Nyakasanga trading centre as they tried to wade through the flooded road while two others in Kilembe could not be traced.

By Wednesday afternoon a frantic search for the victims had been mounted by residents and local authorities.

Floods: Ecweru dashes to Kasese

Disaster Preparedness minister Musa Ecweru with a team from Office of Prime Minister, Uganda Red Cross and district authorities have rushed to Kasese district where torrential rains ravaged villages, killing five people and making scores homeless.

According to Uganda Red Cross, relief trucks from Red Cross and OPM arrived in Kasese Thursday night. The items are targeting 400 families who were mostly affected.

They include: tarpaulins, sauce pans, blankets, mosquito nets, plates, cups, washing soap, jerrycans and water purification tablets.

Rains wash away bridges in Tororo

Several bridges and culverts have been swept away by the current torrential rains in Tororo district, cutting off links between some sub-counties and Tororo town.

The worst hit sub-counties are Magola and Iyolwa after culverts along the route from Iyolwa junction trading centre to Iyolwa sub-county headquarters were washed away on Monday.

The Uganda National Roads Authority Tororo station engineer Chris Opuch in a statement said the road has temporally been closed to allow emergency repairs.

Floods ravage Kisoro, over 150 families displaced

KISORO, Western Uganda - Floods from heavy rains that have hit Murora sub-county in Kisoro district, have left an estimated 150 families displaced.

Several houses have been destroyed while community roads have been eroded by the floods rendering them impassable.

Villages affected include Chibumba, Buyora, Ruhuri and Kooga.

Chibumba Primary School was submerged by the floods and the over 620 pupils were displaced as a result are attending classes from a nearby church building.

Storm ravages Mbale, leaves 1000 homeless

Over 1320 people in Namabasa parish in Nakaloke sub county, Mbale district were left homeless after torrential rains swept houses in the area. A total of 12 persons were injured and admitted at Tobin health Centre after the Saturday downpour.

The heavy rains combined with hailstorm started at 10pm and lasted less than an hour. The storm destroyed Munira and Good Samaritan primary schools and Namabasa Secondary School. Over 1700 students were stranded and are currently taking their classes under trees.

Health Ministry Declares Kabale, Ibanda Marburg-Free

The Minister for Health, Dr. Christine Ondoa, has declared Kabale and Ibanda districts free of the marburg epidemic.

This comes after 42 days elapsed without any new cases reported in the two districts.

Ondoa made the declaration on Thursday at Kabale district council hall after a two-day tour of the district's marburg isolation centres and a meeting with the district's taskforce on marburg.

Marburg fever broke out in September in Mwisi village, Kitumba sub-county in Kabale.

Arua School closed over cholera

The authorities in Arua municipality have closed Hope Kebir primary school before following a cholera outbreak in the area.

The school is located amongst heavily crammed settlements in Kenya ward, Oli division where sporadic cholera cases have been reported since October.

Norah Fathu, the municipal principal health inspector said they found out last week that two cholera patients were sharing a latrine with the children from the school located less than 10 metres away from their house.

Police stop visits to inmates over Ebola

The Police have halted visitation of inmates in all prisons across the city and neighbouring districts.

The move is aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly Ebola haemorrhagic fever among inmates and other people.

Addressing the media at a weekly Police briefing yesterday, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi yesterday said the visitors will only be given access to the suspects if the reason is serious enough.

Govt announces free pneumonia vaccination

The Government will next year start free vaccination against pneumonia, the biggest killer of children below the age of five worldwide.

Health ministry spokesperson Rukia Nakamatte confirmed that the ministry had received funding to roll-out the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine.

The vaccine helps protect children against streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.

Marburg death toll climbs to seven

Another person has died of the Marburg viral disease in the southwestern district of Kabale, bringing the total number of such deaths to seven.

Lydia Rusanyuka died Saturday morning at Rushoroza health center three after spending less than a week under medical care inside the isolation center.

The deadly virus claimed its seventh victim just a little over a week since its outbreak in the district was first reported by health experts.

Marburg Virus claims another victim; death toll at 6

One of the two people, who were admitted on Monday with signs of the deadly marburg fever, has died.

Edward Turyamureba, a 38-year-old resident of Kicumbi Cell, Kamuganguzi sub-county, succumbed to severe bleeding and vomiting on Tuesday evening.

He is the sixth person suspected to have died from the disease since it was reported earlier this month. He was laid to rest at a brief funeral yesterday.

Two people were admitted to an isolation centre at Rushoroza Health Centre III in Kabale district on Monday.

Floods disrupt UCE exams in Katakwi

Floods in Katakwi have greatly affected the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Exams which started a week ago.

Candidates of Magoro Comprehensive SS always start their exams more than 30 minutes late because they have to wait until the boat which delivers question papers arrives.

Of the 40 registered candidates in the school, 38 are sitting but two disappeared immediately after registration.

However, Toroma police post examination collection centre is cut off from the school.

Ntoroko Flood victims call for more relief

Over 600 households that were displaced by floods in Ntoroko district after River Semuliki burst its banks are calling for more relief support from Government and other non-governmental organisations.

The floods, which cut off sub counties of Butungama, Bweramule and Kanara, destroyed property ranging from houses to domestic animals.

“I have received reports that a number of goats and cows have been killed by floods,” Edward Birungi, a parish chief in Butungama, said. He quickly added that no human death has been reported so far.

Lightning kills 7 in Kabale, Kisoro

Seven people were killed in Kabale and Kisoro districts after being hit by lightning over the weekend following the onset of the rainy season.

The rains have been heavily pummeling the region for the last couple of weeks, with bridges flooding and roads cut off.

The South Western Regional Police spokesman Elly Maate confirmed that in Kabale district, two people were struck by lightning in Kamwirima cell, Kanjobe parish, Kyanamira subcounty.
