South Sudan: Thousands more affected by violence

Over the past three months, violence has caused casualties and new civilian displacement. The ICRC sent its rapid-response surgical team to the remote Jonglei state and to Wau. Elsewhere, it distributed aid to thousands and eased the shortage of clean water for displaced people.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 35,000 men, women and children have crossed the border from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to Uganda in search of safety. During its visits to refugee camps in Uganda, the ICRC met a group of lost boys coming from various parts of eastern DRC. Some want to go back home, some hope for a brighter future in Uganda or elsewhere.

ICRC hands over health project at Luzira Upper Prison

Kampala (ICRC) – The ICRC today handed over a pilot health project at Kampala’s Luzira Upper Prison to the Ugandan authorities.

Over the last four years, inmates at Luzira Upper Prison have received treatment for tuberculosis, malaria or HIV/AIDS, and it was the resulting improvement in prisoner health that meant the ICRC could transfer the project to the Uganda Prisons Service.
