UNHCR operational highlights

• CAR refugees newly arrived in DRC have been pre-registerd by UNHCR in Equateur and Oriental Provinces. The new refugees fled the Southern part of CAR, mainly from the localities of Zemio, Rafai, Tabani, Gurekindo, and Djinikouma, the cities of Bangassou, Zime and Mobaye Mbanga, as well as from Bangui.

• Since February 2013, UNHCR deployed an emergency team in Gbadolite, Equateur Province. The Agency has also established presence in Ango and Bondo, Oriental Province.

Q&A: Future remains bleak for Democratic Republic of the Congo

GENEVA, March 8 (UNHCR) – UNHCR's operation in the sprawling Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one of the biggest and most diverse that it runs in the world. A staff of around 400 people, headed by Regional Representative Stefano Severe, provide protection and aid to hundreds of thousands of people, including refugees, internally displaced Congolese and returnees in rural and urban areas. They are based in Kinshasa or more than a dozen towns in the provinces.

The Lessons and Limits of DDR in Africa

  • Notwithstanding laudable successes, incomplete or poorly conceived disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) initiatives have been key factors to high rates of conflict relapse in Africa.

  • Reintegration is the most complex and critical yet least prioritized facet of DDR.

  • The decision to integrate former militias into the national army is typically a political expediency that impedes military professionalism and increases the likelihood of human rights abuses and instability.

République Démocratique du Congo : 2012 en revue (décembre 2012)

2012 a vu une augmentation constante du nombre de personnes deplacées internes, passant de 1,7 millions en décembre 2011 à près de 2,7 millions en décembre 2012. L'est du pays est demeuré très instable dû à l'insécurité née de la présence des différents groupes armés- au Katanga, la population déplacée interne a quintuplé.

La persistence et la resurgence de plusieurs maladies ont fragilisé des communautes déjà démunies. Dans le reste du pays, des poches humanitaires surgissent, le défi principal étant les programmes de développement.

Brazzaville, Congo: 27 October 2012 – As the Sahel food crisis persists, compounded by recent flooding in the region, the World Health Organization (WHO) has appealed to health and development partners to support affected countries prioritize de-worming activities as part of urgent relief efforts.

"Flooding now being experienced in parts of the Sahel, creates the ideal breeding ground for contracting Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as bilharzia, and worm-like diseases putting more at risk of malnutrition,” says WHO African Regional Director Dr Luis Gomes Sambo.

Based on data received from the Early Warning System through the Event Management System (EMS)*, 56 public health events were reported to the Regional Office covering the period January - August 2012 of which 89% were due to infectious diseases.
