United Nations increases health spending in 2013

COPENHAGEN, 10 July 2014 – The value of procurement of goods and services by the United Nations was $16.1 billion in 2013, with the largest sums spent on pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, medical equipment, transportation, construction and food.
These highlights are part of the latest Annual Statistical Report on UN Procurement, which provides data and analysis on the goods and services procured by the UN system in support of its operations.

Asylum seekers and refugees – men, women and even children – are increasingly detained and interned around the world, as are numbers of other migrants. Sometimes detained indefinitely and often in appalling conditions, they may suffer not only deprivation of their liberty but other abuses of their human rights too. Detention may appear to be a convenient solution to states’ political quest to manage migration (often as a precursor to deportation) but it is an expensive option and has lasting effects on those detained.

Grâce au fonds d’aide d’urgence de la Croix-Rouge internationale et du Croissant-Rouge (DREF, Disaster Relief Emergency Fund), la Belgique a financé ces dernières semaines des opérations de secours au Rwanda, en Ouganda et au Pérou. Cette aide humanitaire a été mise en place suite aux fortes pluies survenues dans ces trois pays. La Coopération belge au Développement participe aux actions pour un montant total de 125.000 euros.

Le jeudi 5 avril 2012 s'est tenue à Kampala la 3e Commission mixte belgo-ougandaise sur la coopération bilatérale au développement.

Après le succès rencontré par la mise en œuvre des deux premiers programmes de coopération (2005-2008 et 2008-2012), la Belgique libère un nouveau budget de 74 millions d'euros (ventilé en 64 millions alloués à l'appui budgétaire sectoriel et aux projets, ainsi qu'une tranche additionnelle maximale de 10 millions) pour les 4 prochaines années (2012-2016).

Rwanda has been experiencing severe storms, while Uganda is dealing with an outbreak of an extremely fatal variant of the Ebola virus. Via the International Red Cross, the Belgian Development Cooperation is quickly making funds available for the containment of the Ebola virus, as well as to support the victims of the floods and landslides. The relief fund means that actions can be taken faster in smaller-scale emergency situations.
