Protracted conflicts

Can you get used to living with war? Probably, in the same way that you can somehow get used to living with physical pain, with constant stress, with disturbing noises. You get used to it, you bear with it in silence, because you have no other choice. You don't know of any alternative.

One thing is for sure: the surrounding world can "get used" to protracted conflict. The international community, the media, the aid organisations - they can all turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to suffering that does not have any news value. Protracted

Review of Political Missions 2010

Strategic Summary

Richard Gowan

Overviews of international engagement in conflict-affected states typically focus on military peacekeeping and the economics of postconflict peacebuilding. This excludes an array of primarily civilian missions deployed by the United Nations (UN) as well as other multilateral institutions in countries and regions that are at risk of, experiencing or emerging from violence. The hallmark of these missions is political engagement with governments, parties and civil society aimed at averting, mitigating or stopping conflict.

Peacekeeping successes and failures in Africa

When the colonial order ended in Africa, a myriad of problems confronted the new African nations. According to a recent study 16 wars took place between 1990 and 1997 in Africa. Only 2 were interstate (Chad/Libya and Rwanda/Uganda).

In the 1990s US President George Bush Snr. announced the so-called "New World Order." As a result, he charted

Africa: Conflicts Without Borders - Sub-national and Transnational Conflict-Affected Areas (January 2007 - August 2008)

Instead of the usual depiction of conflicts as countrywide and defined by national boundaries, this map displays distinct conflict-affected areas in Africa as sub-national and transnational pockets of insecurity, violence, and armed aggression.  Areas of conflict were drawn around locations of reported conflict incidents in 2007 and 2008, as well as concentrations of internally displaced persons and cross-border rebel bases and refugee camps in neighboring countries.  This depiction of areas of conflict more accurately displays where conflict has been occurring
