Crop Prospects and Food Situation, No. 1, March 2014

HIGHLIGHTS

  • FAO’s forecasts for global cereal production, consumption, trade and stocks in 2013/14 have all been raised since February, with overall supply conditions significantly improved compared to the previous season.

  • Export prices of wheat rose in February mainly on concerns about the 2014 winter wheat crop in the United States. Prices of maize also increased, supported by strong domestic and export demand for feed and industrial use. Overall, however, cereal export prices remained below their year-earlier levels.

Member States and the private sector contributed $474 million to CERF for 2013—the highest-ever annual total. An additional $6.7 million was pledged and remains outstanding.

  • During fiscal year 2012-13, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) supported disaster risk management and recovery initiatives in over 80 developing countries.

  • Last year, 85 percent of the World Bank’s Country Assistance and Country Partnership Strategies incorporated disaster and climate risk analysis, a substantial increase from 44 percent during the mid-2000s.

BRUXELLES, 13 novembre 2013 (IRIN) - La nouvelle conférence des Nations Unies sur le changement climatique a débuté le 11 novembre à Varsovie avec, en toile de fond, le passage du typhon Haiyan, qui aurait fait au moins 10 000 victimes aux Philippines. Or, selon deux nouveaux documents, le financement promis pour aider les pays pauvres à s'adapter au changement climatique a jusqu'à présent été insuffisant et opaque.

BRUSSELS, 11 November 2013 (IRIN) - Yet another round of UN climate talks begins today, this time in Warsaw, occurring against the backdrop of Typhoon Haiyan, which has reportedly killed at least 10,000 people in the Philippines. But two new papers point out that funding promised to help countries adapt to climate change have been insufficient and untransparent.
