KAMPALA, 29 June 2017 - The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany announced yesterday a grant of Euro 16 million to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist South Sudanese refugees in Uganda.

The contribution will help UNHCR provide nearly 1 million South Sudanese refugees with improved access to education, better housing and increased access to drinking water. The funds will be deployed over a period of three years, including Euro 13 million in 2017, 2 million in 2018 and 1 million in 2019.

All displaced people need some form of shelter, and circumstances dictate that in reality not much of it conforms to the typical picture of a tent or tarpaulin nor meets official standards. The types of shelter and settlement responses found, employed and created by, and created for, displaced people profoundly affect their experience of displacement. According to a new UNHCR study, most of the 3.2 million who were driven from their homes in the first half of 2016 found shelter in low or middle income countries.

GENEVA – Conflict, persecution and violence newly uprooted at least 3.2 million people in the first half of last year, and low- and middle-income countries played the greatest role in sheltering the world’s displaced, a new report by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has found.
