KIGALI, Oct 1 (AFP) - Rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo fought off a joint assault by government troops and their militia allies on the strategic town of Kindu at a cost of at least 14 lives, the rebels said.
"The assailants, a combined group of the Congolese Armed Forces, Interahamwe (Rwandan Hutu extremist militia) and Mai-Mai (local tribal militias), with the latter predominant, briefly seized the town and part of the airport," rebel spokesman Jean-Pierre Lola Kisanga said late Sunday.

by Emmanuel Giroud
NAIROBI, Sept 28 (AFP) - Preparations for peace talks among the government, the political opposition and rebel movements in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have run into last-minute obstacles, a mediator said Friday.

The representation in negotiations of DRC militia forces is one problem and finance is another, said Hacen Ould Lebatt, the troubleshooter mediating among parties ahead of the talks due to begin on October 15 in Addis Ababa.

LUANDA, Sept 20 (AFP) - Namibian President Sam Nujoma was due Thursday in Angola for talks on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after Namibia pulled its 2,000 troops out of that country, officials said in Luanda.
