Drought Bulletin summary for the Month of OCTOBER 2011

October received less below normal rainfall with the onset of the dry season. There is increased yellowing and shedding of leaves among Desert dates and Neem. No more appearance of mushrooms and mosses was reported, which is normal at this time of the year. The prediction from the Meteorological Department for Kaabong district mentions that there is high chance of normal to above normal rainfall in November.

DAKAR (AlertNet) – Thousands of women and girls who have been abducted by armed groups, enslaved and repeatedly raped during conflicts across Africa are left without support when the war ends, experts say.

After the bullets have stopped flying, peacekeepers and governments focus on disarming fighters – who are usually men and boys - and helping them to return home and reintegrate into their communities.

Lack of resources, political will slows male circumcision progress

The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) together with ICRC recently conducted a joint mission to Nakivale and Oruchinga Refugee Settlements in South Western Uganda. The mission included the Head of Sector East African Cooperation and Coordination Ms. Celline Leonet who wanted to learn more about the where URCS operates.

Among the activities done were meetings that were held at URCS Mbarara Branch office, in Nakivale and Oruchinga settlement facilities.

LRA Crisis Tracker Monthly Security Brief [October 2011]

OCTOBER SECURITY SUMMARY

Records of reported LRA attacks during October 2011 revealed an unprecedented reduction of violence against civilians, with LRA forces reportedly having killed 0 and abducted 3 civilians. This marks the lowest levels of killings and abductions per month seen in the last 23 months from its peak at the Makombo Massacre in December 2009.

Of 11 reported LRA attacks in October, all reportedly took place in Haut Uele, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with none reported in Central African Republic (CAR) or South Sudan (S. Sudan).

The month received relatively normal rainfall as predicted by the department of Meteorology though with a decline in the average amount received. It should be noted that the rainfall amount is likely to continue declining further in the next months and to be near to below normal.
