« Owning » The DDR Process? Lessons From Africa And Colombia

At a recent workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, jointly organized by TDRP and DPKO, 40 participants discussed what national ownership meant in their efforts to disarm, demobilize and reintegrate (DDR) combatants.

Eleven African countries and Colombia were represented. Participants included current and former heads of DDR commissions, and representatives from civil society, donor countries and multilateral organizations.

October 13 2011 - Lessons learned from Asia’s Green Revolution about the damage intensive farming can cause are being ignored in the race to help Africa feed itself, Christian Aid warns in a report published today.

Sustainable farming techniques are being sidelined in favour of a quick-fix solution - modern seed varieties (MVs) that produce better yields if treated with synthetic fertiliser and pesticides.

NEW YORK, 23 September 2011 (IRIN) - Simultaneously tackling obesity and malnutrition may seem like “polar opposites”, conceded UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the High-Level Meeting on Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in New York, but an increasing number of countries are experiencing higher rates of both and the answer to reducing this phenomenon is the same: better nutrition.

NAIROBI, 30 September 2011 (IRIN) - Detailed updates about the activity of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) are now available in near real-time, thanks to a partnership between two US-based NGOs.

The LRA Crisis Tracker, a joint venture between Invisible Children and Resolve provides data on attacks, killings, abductions, injuries and looting by the LRA, an insurgency that began in northern Uganda in the 1980s, whose fighters are now scattered across remote areas of South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

· As of mid-September, approximately 1.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) remained uprooted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with the majority displaced in North Kivu, South Kivu, and Orientale provinces, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The majority of IDPs fled their homes as a result of ongoing fighting and individual acts of violence, including the more than 128,000 people newly displaced between January and March 2011.

Amudat District Drought Bulletin Report September 2011

The month marked the beginning of a decline in the rainfall trend. 45mm of rainfall were received compared to the 72mm received in August, as predicted by the department of meteorology. This decline is expected to continue with cessation occurring around late October. The vegetation condition also continued to change with an increase in the percentage of trees turning yellow and shading off leaves.

Press statement of the 295th meeting of the Peace and Security Council

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), at its 295 th meeting, held on 27 September 2011, was briefed by the Commissioner for Peace and Security on the activities relating to the AU regional cooperation initiative for the elimination of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).

Council recalled the relevant provisions of the Tripoli Plan of Action [SP/ASSEMBLY/PS/MAP(I)] and decision Assembly/AU/Dec.294 (XV).2, adopted by the Assembly of the Union, in Tripoli, in August 2009, and in Kampala, in July 2010, respectively.
