Ebola outbreak paralyzes activities in W. Uganda

KAMPALA, Dec 1, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Ebola outbreak in Bundibugyo District has paralyzed businesses and social activities in the larger part of western Uganda.

Bundibugyo Rural District Council (RDC) Samuel Kazinga said many residents in districts of Kasese, Bundibugyo and Kabarole have confined themselves at home for fear of catching the disease.

Uganda to be in land crisis due to large population

KAMPALA, Dec1, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- By 2010 parts of eastern Uganda will have no enough land available for the number of peasants on it and the land crisis will gradually spread to the rest of the country by 2022, according to a new report released recently by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The "State of the Environment Report for Uganda 2006-2007" attributes the crisis to high population growth. According to the World Population Data Sheet released this month, Uganda is going to have the world's biggest population increase in the next four decades.

Ugandan rebel group members agree to disarm and return home - UN mission

Seven members of the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), which has been fighting Ugandan Government forces for two decades, have surrendered to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and agreed to enter a disarmament, repatriation and reintegration scheme.

The seven combatants were escorted on Wednesday by blue helmets from the UN mission (known by its French acronym MONUC) in Ituri district and flown to the city of Bunia a day later for repatriation to Uganda, the mission reported today.

Ebola haemorrhagic fever in Uganda

The Ministry of Health (MoH), Uganda, has confirmed an outbreak of Ebola haemorrhagic fever, in Bundibugyo District, western Uganda. As of 28 November, 51 suspected cases, including 16 deaths have been reported. Among the reported cases, 3 health care workers were also infected, including one fatality. Cases are being hospitalized at Kikyo and Bundibugyo.

Ugandan gov't sends second team to contain outbreak of deadly Ebola

KAMPALA, Nov 30, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Ugandan government has dispatched another medical team to beef up efforts to contain the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever that has killed 16 people out of 51 infected cases in the western district of Bundibugyo.

Sam Okware, Commissioner for Health Services told Xinhua by telephone on Friday that the team had been dispatched to beef up an earlier response team which has been working with district officials to contain the disease.

Uganda Red Cross Society scales up HIV/AIDS care of PLWHIV

A total of 30 new home care facilitators in Kampala East have been trained in comprehensive HIV&AIDS prevention, care and support. The training was as a result of the scale up process in the number of clients from 200 to 400. The home care facilitators required knowledge and skill in drug monitoring, counseling, coaching of primary care givers to ensure that clients receive appropriate information and services in their homes.

Uganda: Sexual abuse survivors in north denied justice - Amnesty

KAMPALA, 30 November 2007 (IRIN) - Amnesty International has accused Uganda's justice system of "tacitly condoning and protecting suspected perpetrators" of rape and other sexual abuses against women and girls in the north of the country.
