Uganda: Answers in the sand

Report
Medair
""If there is no money for food, how can we buy books?" - parent in Patongo IDP camp, Uganda.
The education situation within the camps of Northern Uganda is grim. Hundreds of children cram into a single classroom, but there are not enough desks for everyone to sit. Simple books, pens, and teaching materials are often inaccessible luxuries. Although primary education within Uganda is free in most schools with the Government of Uganda's UPE (Universal Primary Education) policy, the essential requirements of books, pens, and pencils are not.

FEWS Uganda Food Security Watch May 2006 - High food insecurity persists in north

Banana Bacterial Wilt threatens livelihoods in the west

The frequency of attacked by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has declined in recent months, according to data from UN agencies monitoring civil security and humanitarian organizations working in Gulu, Kitgum and Pader districts of northern Uganda. Nonetheless, LRA rebels remain active, and the region remains insecure with regular abductions reported. Most of the estimated 1.45 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) still live in camps; only a few have moved closer or back to their homes.

Uganda: Coming Home - Understanding why commanders of the LRA choose to return to a civilian life

SUMMARY
In 2005 it seemed as if conflict transformation and peacebuilding efforts in northern Uganda were more and more sidelined while a military approach to end the war between the Government of Uganda (GoU) and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) became increasingly dominant. In this environment, Conciliation Resources (CR) and Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) together with their partners set out to assess the actual impact of ongoing peacebuilding processes and their potential to contribute to ending the war in the LRA-affected areas. The research confirmed

Uganda: Gulu District landmine/ERW victims survey report

Report
AVSI
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

I. Background

For the last 20 years, the Acholi region of Northern Uganda has suffered from continued armed conflict that has led to contamination of mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). Although the number of mines present in Uganda is less than other mine-affected countries (Afghanistan, Angola, Mozambique, Iraq, etc.), the nature of mine use has created a difficult problem to address. There is little or no information(1) on the location or suspicion of mines because such ordnances have been used on an ad hoc basis. Most of the landmines are found in remote

By Opheera McDoom

KHARTOUM, May 30 (Reuters) - Sudan's First Vice President Salva Kiir defended giving aid to the wanted Ugandan rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) saying it would help start peace talks and stop them looting and killing in the lawless south.

In a videotaped meeting in early May between south Sudan's vice president, Riek Machar, and LRA chief Joseph Kony, Machar secured a request for peace talks and handed Kony a wad of cash saying it was $20,000 to buy "food... not ammunition."
